Volevo copiarlo. I suoi vestiti sono cos? femminili e potenti". Saranno battute oggi anche un certo numero di stampe di Marilyn Monroe. Tra queste, anche una stampa d'argento del valore di 2.500 dollari e un calendario del 1955 con la riproduzione a colori di un nudo di Marilyn scattato dal fotoghafo americano Tom Kelley, da cui si prevede di recuperare fino a 1.200 dollari.

Rover could be on Martian clays

Nasa's Opportunity rover appears to have reached another milestone in its amazing nine-year mission on Mars.

Scientists report the robot has been trundling over what they believe to be clay-bearing rocks on the edge of a wide bowl known as Endeavour Crater.

Clays are water-altered minerals, but very different to the ones seen by the rover so far on its travels.

Those previous minerals were in contact with acidic water; clays are formed in the presence of neutral water.

"What drives us to investigate the problem of water on Mars is the fact that water is a necessary condition for life; but there's water and there's water," said Prof Steve Squyres, Opportunity's principal investigator from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

"We've been seeing sulphate minerals from day one with this rover. These sulphates form under very acid conditions. And even though water was present, if it's that acid it would be very challenging as a place for life to take hold.

"However, if it's not acid, if it's the kind of water you can drink, it's the kind of water that's going to be more suitable for life; and that's what the clays point to," he told BBC News.

Prof Squyres was speaking here this week at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the largest annual gathering of Earth and planetary scientists.

He was updating the meeting on the most recent work of the robot which landed on Mars in 2004 to investigate its potential for microbial habitability in the past.

Since August 2011, it has been driving across the western rim of the 22km-wide Endeavour depression.

Opportunity is trying to understand the sequence of rocks at the crater which is likely to have been punched out of the ground by an asteroid more than three billion years ago.

As part of that study it has been surveying a mound the science team refers to as Matijevic Hill in honour of the late Jake Matijevic, a senior rover engineer.

Two outcrops, within 100m of each other, have caught the attention.

The first, dubbed "Whitewater Lake", is the one that appears to be clay-bearing.

"The nature of the rocks that we have found, that we think are the ones that contain the clays, are very soft," explained Prof Squyres.

"They're light-toned; they're very fine-grained - so all the things that you would expect if clay minerals were present. They're layered and their composition is consistent with clay minerals being present."

The second outcrop is called "Kirkwood". This comprises small spheres caught in a matrix. At first, the team thought they had stumbled upon more of the famous haematite (an iron-rich mineral) "blueberries" seen earlier in Opportunity's mission. But Steve Squyres says these "newberries" seem to have a quite distinct composition.

The investigation of the two outcrops is still in its infancy. As well as using the rover's X-ray spectrometer on Whitewater Lake and Kirkwood to determine the chemical elements present, and thus get a better idea of their mineralogical composition, the team needs to work out the order and position of the rock layers to tell them something of their relative ages.

At the moment, it is not clear whether the two outcrops relate to a period from before or after the creation of Endeavour.

Opportunity continues to exceed all expectations. Its twin, Spirit, which was landed on the other side of Mars, succumbed to the dust and cold of the Red Planet in 2010. But "Oppy" keeps on rolling.

"We voided the warranty on this thing a very long time ago," Prof Squyres told the BBC.

"It was designed for 90 days; it's been almost nine years - this thing could drop dead tomorrow.

"I hope it lasts a long time but nothing's a given this late into the mission.

"We have the equipment that we need [to answer the questions we have about these rocks], I just hope we have the time that we need."

Fab Food Friday Fotos: BBQ Pulled Chicken Sandwiches, Peanut ...

Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on December 7, 2012

?Onions and bacon cooking up just makes your kitchen smell so good. In fact, one day I?m going to come up with a room deodorizer that smells like bacon and onions. It?s a fabulous smell.?

~ Paula Deen

FOOD. GLORIOUS FOOD.

TGI Friday! Take a few minutes to cast away the stresses and demands and bustle of the holiday season and scroll through this week?s round-up of mouth-watering food photos and assorted recipes. Shoes off, relax, and enjoy.

When they?re available, recipes and recipe links will accompany select ?Fab Food Friday Fotos,? with a guarantee that at least one thrifty recipe will always be included.

Easy Barbecue Pulled Chicken Sandwiches | Photo credit: Emily Carlin, Flickr, Creative Commons, some rights reserved

You can almost smell the spicy barbecue aromas from photographer/cook Emily Carlin?s easy barbecue pulled chicken sandwiches ? the recipe is here at Back to the Cutting Board food blog.

Emily also shared these prep tips and background info:

Back when I lived in Florida, Brandon and I had a favorite barbecue restaurant nearby that we ate at regularly but when we moved to Charlottesville the nearest good barbecue was a 45-minute drive away. That?s when I started making this recipe so that we could still get our barbecue fix. Barbecue sounds like it could be time-consuming to make and in the past I have tried other recipes that took a lot longer which is why I love this recipe. You pretty much just throw everything into a pot with your favorite barbecue sauce and let it cook. It only takes 90 minutes in the oven or you can leave it in a slow cooker all afternoon.

Another important thing that makes this recipe stand out from others I?ve tried is that it uses chicken thighs. Generally, I?m not a huge fan of dark meat, but I have to admit that thighs work much better for barbecue than chicken breasts. They?re also quite a bit less expensive which is always a good thing. Since thighs have a bit more fat on them, they don?t dry out and after 90 minutes of slow cooking they are extremely moist and tender. You barely even have to put effort into shredding the chicken because it falls apart all by itself.

Suet cakes ? I?ve never used them in cooking before, but I?m intrigued. Photographer/cook Chiot?s Run provided the recipe link and this information:

Make Your Own Healthy Suet Cakes

I?ve been wanting to make suet cakes for the longest time but I had trouble finding suet for them. Finally I broke down and bought a 5 gallon pail of pastured beef tallow from US Wellness Meats (I know 5 gallon is a lot). We?ll be using some of this in our cooking, and some of it will be added to the homemade pet food. It will also be used to make suet cakes for our little feathered friends. We love providing suet because we get a lot of woodpeckers at our feeder by having it. A lot of other birds love it as well and it provides a good source of fat and energy for them during the cold winter months.

Fresh Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde | Photo credit: Emily Barney, Flickr, Creative Commons, some rights reserved

Recipe for this fresh tomatillo salsa verde is posted at photographer/cook Emily Barney?s food blog The Kitchen Tourist.

Tomatillos, also known as husk tomato, jamberry, husk cherry, or Mexican tomato, are popular in southwestern states and Mexico, but are not as well known elsewhere. I wrote this about them in a previous post:

Tomatillos (pronounced toe-mah-tee-yohs) are not a green variety of tomato, although both are in the nightshade family. While they somewhat resemble tomatoes and work well with tomatoes, that?s where the similarity ends. This solid fruit, which tastes almost lemony, is also called ?tomate verde? in Mexico (translation: ?green tomato?) and they are a popular staple in many Mexican dishes. When buying them, choose small tomatillos. They?re sweeter than the larger, golf-ball-size fruits. To prepare, peel off the outer brown husk and discard (it?s not edible ? also, when selecting at the store, avoid those tomatillos with husks that are overly wrinkled, as they are not as fresh). Keep the husks on until you?re ready to use the tomatillos, as they keep the fruits fresh longer and protected from bruising. Rinse the tomatillo a bit under cool water (the fruit has a somewhat sticky coating that is easily washed off) and then begin preparing.

These are such an easy fruit to work with, with little clean-up mess. You can either add a few chopped, raw ones to salsas, or cook them by roasting, blanching, parboiling, saut?ing, or frying.

Blueberry Lemon Crumbles | Photo credit: Stef Noble, Flickr, Creative Commons, some rights reserved

Photographer/cook Stef Noble used this Epicurious recipe for her tasty blueberry lemon crumbles:

Blueberry Lemon Crumbles

These small muffin-shaped cookies deliver a brown-sugar-infused crunch, followed by an intensely fruity burst of blueberries and lemon.

* 1 cup sliced almonds with skins
* 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
* 1/2 cup granulated sugar
* 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
* 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh lemon zest
* 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1-1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
* 2 large egg yolks
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
* 1/3 cup dried blueberries
* 1/2 cup blueberry preserves

Special equipment: a nonstick mini-muffin pan with 24 (1/8-cup) cups (or 2 pans with 12 cups each)

Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 375?F.

Toast almonds in 1 layer in a shallow baking pan, stirring once, until golden, 3 to 5 minutes. Cool completely in pan on a rack. Leave oven on.

Pulse flour, sugars, 1 teaspoon zest, cinnamon, and salt in a food processor until combined, then add butter and pulse until mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add yolks and vanilla and process until mixture begins to come together in clumps.

Transfer 1-1/3 cups packed dough to a bowl and stir in almonds (some almonds will break) for almond crumble topping. Gather remaining dough into a ball.

(Stef?s note: You don?t need quite this much for the topping? Maybe only 1 cup?)

Generously butter bottom, sides, and top of muffin pan. Press 1 tablespoon dough into bottom and up side of each muffin cup. Chill until dough is firm, about 15 minutes.

Stir remaining teaspoon zest, lemon juice (2 teaspoons), and dried blueberries into preserves in a small bowl. Spoon a rounded 1/2 teaspoon preserves mixture onto dough in each muffin cup. Crumble 1 rounded teaspoon almond topping evenly into each cup.

Bake until topping is deep golden brown and filling is bubbling, about 20 to 25 minutes. Cool completely in muffin pan on a rack. Loosen edges of crumbles carefully with a small offset spatula or sharp knife, then carefully remove from pan.

Cook?s note: Crumbles keep in an airtight container at room temperature 1 week.

Makes 24 cookies.

Sweet Baked Broccoli | Photo credit: sweetbeetandgreenbean (aka Jacqueline), Flickr, Creative Commons, some rights reserved

Photographer/cook/webmistress Jacqueline wrote this about her awesome baked broccoli dish:

When I posted about baked broccoli here before, I guaranteed that baking is the best way to cook broccoli. It yields soft, tender stems and crunchy, flavorful florets. And they are easy to toss in some olive oil and a few seasonings before roasting for less than a half an hour. Even better than the curry powder L flavored it with before, is a little agave, spices and sesame seeds.

This sweet and savory broccoli recipe has quickly become a favorite of mine, I?ve made it 3 times in the past week! It was even approved as delicious by my roommate, a self-proclaimed broccoli hater. So give it a go, I?m sure you?ll love it!

Here?s Wikipedia?s description of this Georgian cheese: ?Pickled Georgian cheese from the Samegrelo region. It has a sour, moderately salty flavor, a dimpled texture, and an elastic consistency; these attributes are the result of the process used, as is the source of its moniker ?pickle cheese.? Its color ranges from white to pale yellow. While the smell is not universally appealing, the flavor is rewarding. Suluguni is often deep-fried, which helps mask the odor. It is often served in wedges.?

Easy Vanilla Fig Bars (gluten-free) | Photo credit: Elana?s Pantry, Flickr, Creative Commons, some rights reserved

Photographer/cook/webmistress Elana provided the recipe link and wrote this about her gluten-free vanilla fig bars:

Easy Vanilla Fig Bars made with dried figs, shredded coconut and almonds ?gluten free, Paleo, Primal, delicious.

I?ve been working on various power bar recipes lately as I need some easy to pack snacks for an upcoming adventure. My husband and I are planning on climbing a 14?er (that would be a 14,000 foot mountain) this summer and of course I want to make sure we have the proper nourishment. These bars will work well for the two of us given our constitutions.

Like all of my recipes, I tested this one many times before posting it here. During one of my test batches the mixture was so thick that the food processor could not spin it further. When this happened, I pulled the mixture out of the food processor and finished working it together with my hands before placing it in the pan. In the event that this happens to you, feel free to use this little trick.

Finally, if you are wanting to reproduce my exact results, use blanched slivered almonds. The key really is the blanched more than the slivered. Recently, I have been purchasing my blanched slivered almonds at the Whole Foods here in Boulder. You can use almonds that are not blanched and you will get more fiber, however, I found the flavor profile was not as good when I made them this way.

First pop 10 cups of popcorn. You can use one package of microwave popcorn, or if like me you don?t own a microwave (or just prefer to pop your own popcorn the old fashioned way), pop about 1/3 cup of kernels in 3 T of olive oil in a heavy saucepan over high heat. Keep the lid on the pan, and shake vigorously and continuously until most of the kernels have popped.

Spray a large bowl with cooking spray, then pour in the popcorn and lightly salt it. (Optional: Add 1 c. of peanuts). Carefully pick out any unpopped kernels? you don?t want anyone to break a tooth!

Preheat the oven to 250 deg F.

In another saucepan, combine:
* 1 c. brown sugar
* 1/4 c. light corn syrup
* 6 T. butter
* 1/4 tsp salt

Crank up the heat and cook, whisking continuously, until the mixture reaches 250 on a candy thermometer (5-10 minutes).

Turn off the heat and stir in:
* 2 tsp vanilla extract
* 1/2 tsp baking soda

Pour the molten caramel over the popcorn and stir as quickly and as thoroughly as you can.

Turn the whole sticky mess out onto a rimmed baking sheet that you?ve lined with parchment paper, spread the popcorn out as best you can, and pop it in a 250 degree oven for 60 minutes. Every 15 or 20 minutes, stir the popcorn and turn it with a spatula. The caramel will liquefy again in the oven, which makes it a little easier to stir the caramel corn and coat each and every delicious little kernel.

After an hour, take the caramel corn out of the oven and let it cool. Break up any clumps, and store in an airtight container. Supposedly it will last five days this way, but trust me, it will be gone in a flash. Enjoy!

Tips:
-Assemble all of your ingredients and tools before you start cooking. Make sure you have the vanilla and baking soda ready to measure into the molten caramel immediately when it reaches 250 degrees F.

-Line the baking pan with parchment paper before the madness begins. Also, have a heat-proof spatula or two at hand, things can get a little, well, sticky.

-Use a bigger bowl than you think you need ? you want to be able to stir the caramel vigorously into the popcorn without flinging too many blisteringly hot kernels across the room.

Oh, yummy frugality! The price for one pizza from a pizza joint has skyrocketed, and you can quickly make your own at home much more cheaply. Kids love helping, too. Photographer/cook esimpraim her provided the recipe link for her easy, homemade prosciutto, Swiss cheese, and shallot pizza, posted on her food blog Dishing Up Delights, and wrote this:

My free time has become precious and when I have it, I want to do nothing except watch TV and eat pizza? so that?s what I did last weekend? sort of. I always make and freeze extra pizza dough to have in case a craving strikes. There are so many ways to top a pizza, but I loved the simplicity of this. I am not big on the deli ham called for in the original recipe so I used prosciutto. This is such a simple recipe, it?s hard to believe how tasty it is, but trust me. I couldn?t get enough. In fact, since I only made half of the recipe below, I have enough of the ingredients to make it again this weekend?and maybe I will.

The recipe is adapted from one posted at Real Simple.

Avastin Won't Extend Breast Cancer Survival: Study - Drugs.com ...

FRIDAY Dec. 7, 2012 -- The drug Avastin (bevacizumab), when added to chemotherapy, does not improve disease-free survival in patients with triple-negative breast cancer any better than chemo alone, new research finds.

"Therefore, sadly for patients, we have nothing extra to add to chemotherapy for early, triple-negative breast cancer," Dr. David Cameron, a professor of oncology at Edinburgh University in Scotland, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research.

He was scheduled to present the findings Friday at the 2012 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Previous studies of Avastin had found benefit. However, in 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revoked approval of the drug for late-stage breast cancer, citing risks -- such as heart failure and severe high blood pressure -- that outweigh the benefits. The drug may still be used off-label, with doctors prescribing it to patients if they think that patient could be helped.

This new study signals the death of the drug for breast cancer, although it is helpful in other cancers, said Dr. Joanne Mortimer, director of Women's Cancer Programs for the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif. She reviewed the new findings.

Another physician took a different view, saying others should consider continuing research on the drug. "We have all seen some success stories with the drug, and Avastin may be a drug that works in only a select few," said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Avastin is marketed by Genentech. Swiss drugmaker Hoffmann-La Roche, which acquired Genentech, sponsored the study.

For the new study, researchers randomly assigned nearly 2,600 patients with triple-negative operable primary invasive breast cancer to four or more cycles of chemotherapy. They used either an anthracycline-based or taxane-based chemo drug. One group also received a year of Avastin therapy.

Triple-negative breast cancer refers to those tumors that do not have estrogen or progesterone receptors or express the HER2/neu gene.

The researchers followed the women to see if the Avastin made a difference in disease-free survival. At a median follow-up of 32 months, no significant improvement occurred by adding Avastin.

Among those who received chemo alone, 107 died during the follow-up period, compared with 93 deaths in the group getting chemo plus Avastin, the investigators found.

Those in the Avastin group were more likely than the chemo-alone group to have problems such as severe high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

The drug is effective in other cancers, Mortimer said. "It's a very important drug for lung, [gastrointestinal] and kidney cancers," she explained.

The drug is still listed in the recommendations for breast cancer treatment by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. The not-for-profit is an alliance of 21 major international cancer centers, including City of Hope.

Health insurers turn to the recommendations when deciding which drugs to cover. Avastin is costly, about $112,000 a year for breast cancer patients.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Insect-eating bat outperforms nectar specialist as pollinator of cactus flowers

Friday, December 7, 2012

Of the two bat species known to visit the flowers of the cardon cactus in Baja California, one depends entirely on nectar and is highly specialized to feed from the flowers, which are adapted for pollination by bats. The other is an insect-eating bat best known for its ability to hear the footsteps of large insects and scorpions and capture them on the ground.

In a surprising result, scientists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have found that the insect-eating pallid bat is a more effective pollinator of the cactus flowers than the nectar-feeding specialist, the lesser long-nosed bat.

"The lesser long-nosed bat is highly specialized for nectar-feeding and was thought to be the primary pollinator of the cardon cactus. But when we measured their effectiveness, we found that the pallid bat actually delivers about 13 times as much pollen per visit," said Winifred Frick, a research scientist at UC Santa Cruz. Frick is first author of a paper on the new findings published online in American Naturalist.

The study highlights the complex nature of the mutually beneficial relationships between plants and their pollinators, which in most cases have evolved together over long periods of time. There are often conflicts of interest between the partners, according to coauthor Kathleen Kay, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz.

"What is actually happening in terms of how species are mutually interacting can be more complicated than what meets the eye," Kay said. "You would think the coevolved species would be a better pollinator than a naive interloper. But the adaptations for nectar-feeding of the lesser long-nosed bat are to enable it to get more nectar, not for it to do a better job pollinating."

Frick said several factors may explain the difference between the two bat species in pollination effectiveness. The lesser long-nosed bat is able to hover at the open cactus flowers and uses its long tongue to extract the nectar, transferring pollen from one flower to another in the process. The pallid bat, in contrast, has to land on the flowers and plunge its head deep inside to get to the nectar, resulting in longer visits and more copious accumulations of pollen on its head. In addition, the lesser long-nosed bat relies on pollen as a source of protein and regularly grooms itself during a night of flower visits, removing some of the pollen from its fur and eating it.

Frick, a bat ecologist, had observed pallid bats visiting cardon cactus flowers during earlier research projects in the area and knew that the bats often had pollen on them. For the new study, she teamed up with Kay, an expert in pollination biology and plant evolution. They monitored cactus flowers at 14 study sites in Baja California, working with a team of student assistants from Mexico and UC Santa Cruz. The cardon cactus is a large columnar cactus and is the dominant plant species in the study area. When the researchers saw a bat visit a flower, they would identify the species, climb a ladder to the flower, remove the stigma, and count the number of pollen grains the bat had delivered. They also took data on the number of flower visits by each of the two species at each study site.

The results showed that the pallid bats not only delivered more pollen per visit on average, but in some areas were frequent enough visitors to be more effective pollinators overall than the lesser long-nosed bats.

Plants that are adapted for bat pollination have large, sturdy flowers that bloom at night. The lesser long-nosed bat belongs to a large family of nectar-feeding bats that are important pollinators, especially in tropical habitats. The pallid bat, in contrast, is the only nectar feeder known in its mostly insect-eating family, which is the largest and most widespread family of bats.

"A lot of pollinators come from lineages that are quite old and have been coevolving with plants for a long time," Kay said. "You might think that a new pollinator would not be a good pollinator, but in this case it's actually a better pollinator because it's not well adapted for nectar-feeding. It's exciting to get a glimpse of what the initial stages might be in the evolution of a novel feeding behavior."

Frick said she has video of a pallid bat attacking a large moth on a flower, so it's not hard to imagine how the insect-eating pallid bats might have discovered the sweet nectar hidden inside cactus flowers.

Kay noted that many animals that visit flowers are just feeding without pollinating the flowers or otherwise benefiting the plants. There are also examples of invasive pollinators that disrupt a coevolved plant-pollinator relationship and do a worse job of pollination. "In this case it's the evolutionarily newer pollinator doing a better job, and I haven't seen that before," she said.

The lesser long-nosed bats were effective pollinators of cardon cactus flowers at many of the study sites. But the study found considerable variation between sites, and because the lesser long-nosed bat is migratory, there may be variability from year to year as well, Frick said. The greater variability of the migratory lesser long-nosed bats could make the resident pallid bats especially important as pollinators of cardon cactus.

"The lesser long-nosed bat is an adequate pollinator, but there is a lot of variation in where they occur. We would like to look at that variation over several years," Frick said.

(AP) ? This year's Nobel Prize in literature winner, Mo Yan, who has been criticized for his membership in China's Communist Party and reluctance to speak out against the country's government, defended censorship Thursday as something as necessary as airport security checks.

He also suggested he won't join an appeal calling for the release of the jailed 2010 Peace Prize laureate, Liu Xiaobo, a fellow writer and compatriot.

Mo has been criticized by human rights activists for not being a more outspoken defender of freedom of speech and for supporting the Communist Party-backed writers' association, of which he is vice president.

His comments Thursday, made during a news conference in Stockholm, appear unlikely to soften his critics' views toward him.

Awarding him the literature prize has also brought criticism from previous winners. Herta Mueller, the 2009 literature laureate, called the jury's choice of Mo a "catastrophe" in an interview with the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter last month. She also accused Mo of protecting the Asian country's censorship laws.

China's rulers forbid opposition parties and maintain strict control over all media.

Mo said he doesn't feel that censorship should stand in the way of truth but that any defamation, or rumors, "should be censored."

"But I also hope that censorship, per se, should have the highest principle," he said in comments translated by an interpreter from Chinese into English.

Mo is spending several days in Stockholm before receiving his prestigious prize in an awards ceremony next Monday.

He won the Nobel for his sprawling tales of life in rural China. In its citation, the jury said Mo "with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary."

In addressing the sensitive issue of censorship in China, Mo likened it to the thorough security procedures he was subjected to as he traveled to Stockholm.

"When I was taking my flight, going through the customs ... they also wanted to check me ? even taking off my belt and shoes," he said. "But I think these checks are necessary."

Mo also dodged questions about Liu Xiaobo, the jailed Peace Prize winner. Liu was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 for co-authoring a bold call for ending China's single-party rule and enacting democratic reforms.

China's reception of the two Nobel laureates has been worlds apart.

While it rejected the honor bestowed on Liu, calling it a desecration of the Nobel tradition, it welcomed Mo's win with open arms, saying it reflected "the prosperity and progress of Chinese literature, as well as the increasing influence of China."

Although Mo has previously said he hopes Liu will be freed soon, he refused to elaborate more on the case.

"On the same evening of my winning the prize, I already expressed my opinion, and you can get online to make a search," he said, telling the crowd that he hoped they wouldn't press him on the subject of Liu.

Some, however, have interpreted Mo's October comments as if he hoped the release of Liu would make the jailed activist see sense and embrace the Communist Party line.

Earlier this week, an appeal signed by 134 Nobel laureates, from Peace Prize winners such as South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Taiwanese-American chemist Yuan T. Lee, called the detention of Liu and his wife a violation of international law and urged their immediate release.

But Mo suggested he had no plans of adding his name to that petition. "I have always been independent. I like it that way. When someone forces me to do something I don't do it," he said, adding that has been in his stance in the past decade.

Mo is to receive his Nobel prize along with the winners in medicine, physics, chemistry and economics.

The Nobel Peace Prize is handed out in a separate ceremony in Oslo on the same day.

Ex-Fla. Gov. Crist tweets he's joining Democrats

(AP) ? Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who was elected as the state's chief executive as a Republican and then ran for the U.S. Senate as an independent, announced on Twitter on Friday night that he's switching to the Democratic Party.

Crist sent out a Tweet that said, "Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President (at)Barack Obama!"

The Tweet included a photo of a smiling Crist and an unidentified woman as he held up a Florida voter registration application. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Crist signed the papers changing his affiliation from independent to Democrat at a Christmas reception at The White House.

A message left for Crist wasn't immediately returned Friday night.

Crist was elected Florida governor in 2006 while in the GOP. As he moved to run for the U.S. Senate in 2010, he faced a tough primary challenge from the right and bolted the GOP to run as an independent. He lost a three-way Senate contest in 2010 to Republican Marco Rubio.

Crist spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte that nominated President Barack Obama for a second term. Crist, 56, is also viewed as a potential Democratic challenger to Republican Gov. Rick Scott in 2014.
