S&P cuts Egypt sovereign rating (AP)

CAIRO ? Ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Thursday pushed Egypt's sovereign credit ratings deeper into junk status, citing the country's dire political and economic situation and the increased risk of civil strife.

The cut is the latest blow to Egypt, whose economy is reeling from nine months of protests and strikes since the mid-February ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak. Last month, Moody's Investors Service also cut its ratings for Egypt, citing the ongoing political challenges and the weak economy.

S&P said it cut Egypt's long-term foreign and local currency sovereign ratings to B+ from BB-, with a negative outlook.

"The downgrade reflects our opinion that Egypt's weak political and economic profile ... has deteriorated further," the agency said in a statement.

In addition to the current wave of protests against the ruling military council, it cited the erosion of the country's net international reserves and the risk of further unrest stemming from rising expectations.

"These challenges could arise if populist demands for greater political participation are thwarted, or from demands for improved living standards from different sectors of the population no matter who is governing Egypt," the agency said.

The timing of the ratings cut is also troubling for Egypt, coming days before the Nov. 28 parliamentary elections ? the first since Mubarak left office. The fate of the elections is uncertain following the latest protests, in which demonstrators have called for the country's military rulers to step down and transfer power to a national salvation government.

Months of unrest have led analysts to cut forecasts for Egypt's economic growth. A nation that just a few years earlier had boasted growth rates of 7 percent is expected to realize anemic growth of around 1 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Equally troubling has been the drop in international reserves, which fell from $36 billion at the end of December to $22 billion by the end of October. That decline, in part, has been linked to the Central Bank's efforts to prop up the Egyptian pound.

The stock market's benchmark index has shed almost 48 percent since the start of the year, losing around 190 billion pounds ($32 billion) and earning the dubious distinction of being among the worst performing in the world after Greece and Cyprus. On Thursday, the EGX30 index was up about 1.6 percent.

Bond and Treasury bill yields have climbed sharply, reflecting the premium the government must pay to borrow money, and the deficit is expected to climb above earlier forecasts of around 8.6 percent as officials are forced to increase spending to meet incessant popular demands for a boost in the standard of living.

"Following Egypt's popular uprising of January 2011, public expectations regarding the government's ability to promptly deliver improved living standards remain high," S&P said.

FOR KIDS: Young scientists work together and win

Broadcom MASTERS competitors qualified with individual projects, but won based on team challenges

Web edition : 12:37 pm

Guests checking into the posh Palomar Hotel in Washington, D.C., recently, might have been surprised to hear pounding footsteps, shrieks and laughter pouring out of a conference room late one evening. And they would have been even more surprised to see what was behind those doors: 30 of the nation?s top middle school science students, flushed and sweaty, playing dodgeball, riding piggyback on their parents and squirting one another with water bottles.

The students were finalists in the first Broadcom Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars ? or MASTERS ? challenge. The three-day competition kicked off with an evening of icebreaking and team-building activities meant to help these students from throughout the United States and Puerto Rico get to know each other.

It may have looked like all fun and games. But the purpose of these activities was to get students comfortable working in teams to solve problems creatively and to accomplish a shared goal.

What sets this new competition apart from a traditional science fair is its emphasis on teamwork. Finalists were judged not only on their individual science fair projects but also on how they demonstrated leadership and creative problem-solving while working as part of a team during a series of group challenges.

Experts Admit Fukushima is Causing Hidden Cancer Deaths :

You are here: Home / Featured / Experts Admit Fukushima is Causing Hidden Cancer Deaths

By Anthony Gucciardi
Activist Post
November 24, 2011

Health and radiation experts are now admitting that the Fukushima disaster is contributing to an unknown number of deaths as a result of increasing cancer rates around the globe.

They are also stating that these deaths will be ?hidden? from the public eye due to a lack of accurate identification when it comes to targeting Fukushima-related cancer deaths.

Of course the scientific experts are focusing primarily on the evacuation zone radiation and surrounding areas, despite the fact that Fukushima radiation is now so far reaching that it is?adversely affecting the health of United States citizens.

Another piece of vital information challenges the claims of many scientists that the radiation levels unleashed from the meltdown are too low to cause any public health concern.

The report, unleashed in late October, found that the amount of radiation released from the Fukushima meltdown actually?exceeded twice the amount that experts originally claimed.

Additionally, the study researchers stated that the amount of radioactive isotope caesium-137 released at the height of the crisis was equivalent to 42% of that from Chernobyl.

Officials cover up the severity of Fukushima and the true threat to public health

It seems that Japanese government officials and plant higher-ups are continuing to downplay the full effects of the Fukushima disaster.

From concealing integral information from the public to ignoring the real threat to public health, there is sincere lack of honesty and communication between many worldwide health officials and the citizens of the world.

Of course Fukushima impacts the health of citizens worldwide, not just inhabitants of the evacuation zone. In fact, researchers have found a large amount of radioactive material?exceeding that of the evacuation zone arrive in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, officials urge Tokyo residents not to worry.?What?s more, radioactive isotopes have even?been located in California, highlighting the ubiquitous nature of the radioactive material.

Maxim Shingarkin, an expert in nuclear and?radiation?security,?commented on the secretive and deceptive situation in Fukushima:

In fact, this statement came with a big delay. The operating company deliberately concealed this information. The explanation is simple ? the company is afraid that any checking by competent experts would reveal its inability to save the situation. Only recently, foreign experts founded a consultative body for the clean-up of the accident?s consequences. Moreover, the company is concealing the information about the amount of pollution of the environment.

Other experts have also begun speaking out. Marco Kaltofen, PE, of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts, recently discussed current issues revolving around?radiation?exposure in Japan.

41 Crucial Survival Items Finally Revealed(Ad)

A?Registered Professional Engineer investigating Fukushima nuclear material release, Kaltofen stated his findings?in a presentation entitled ?Radiation Exposure to the Population in Japan After the Earthquake?. Presented in Washington D.C. on Monday morning, Kaltofen stated:

  • The Fukushima nuclear accident dispersed airborne dusts that are contaminated with radioactive particles. When inhaled or ingested, these particles can?have negative effects on human health that are different from those caused by exposure to external or uniform radiation fields.
  • A field sampling effort was undertaken to characterize the form and concentration of radionuclides in the air and in environmental media which can accumulate fallout. Samples included settled dusts, surface wipes, used filter masks, used air filters, dusty footwear, and?surface soils.
  • Isolated US soil samples contained?up to 8 nanoCuries per Kg of radiocesium, while control samples showed no detectable radiocesium.

While experts have started admitting that radiation from the Fukushima disaster is breeding diseases like cancer after extensive denial, it?s about time that they also warned the public about the true severity of the issue.

Clooney on witness list for Berlusconi trial (AP)

MILAN ? George Clooney and his ex-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis are among more than 200 witnesses accepted Wednesday by a Milan court in the trial of former Premier Silvio Berlusconi for allegedly paying for sex with an underage prostitute.

Clooney has said he was approached by Berlusconi's team to testify about "bunga bunga" parties at Berlusconi's villas, but says he only visited the premier's residence once to seek aid for Darfur and declined an invitation to stay.

Berlusconi's defense lawyer Niccolo Ghedini told reporters that Clooney and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo are on the defense list because an important prosecution witness cited them, the news agency LaPresse reported. Ghedini said they want to dispute the witness's testimony.

Clooney said in an interview with Time magazine posted online that he was willing to testify, but added: "I wasn't at the bunga bunga party."

"I went to speak about Darfur. ... It was a very interesting conversation to say the least, that became a very different kind of event than anyone ever thought."

At the end of the meeting, Clooney said he was invited to stay for a party. The actor said he responded: "No, I gotta go."

The witness list also includes Karima el-Mahroug, the Moroccan teen who is alleged to have had sex with Berlusconi in exchange for money. Both she and Berlusconi, 75, have denied a sexual relationship.

Also slated to testify are three former aides being tried separately for their alleged role in organizing sex-fueled parties, as well as Mariano Apicella, who has put out four CDs with Berlusconi and often entertains at his residences, and two members of Berlusconi's defunct government, ex-Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and ex-Education Minister Mariastella Gelmini.

By accepting the witnesses, the court agrees their testimony is relevant, although either side may decide later to reduce the number of witnesses or not to call someone because their testimony is no longer needed. Furthermore, Italy has limited power to compel witnesses living abroad to appear, although courts often arrange video testimony for the convenience of potential witnesses.

The court also allowed transcripts of wiretapped calls to be entered as evidence, while a record of phone calls between Berlusconi and a police official won't be admitted.

Berlusconi is also charged with using his influence to cover up the crime of underage prostitution by personally intervening to win el-Mahroug's release from police custody when she was picked up on suspicion of theft.

Berlusconi denies the charge and says he sought to get her out of custody because he believed she was the niece of the former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Ghedini said the exclusion of the phone call records was a "serious problem" for the defense, because it proves there was no abuse of influence, but he said that will be made clear through the police official's testimony.

The trial continues next week with the first witnesses, including police investigators.

Romney picks up Thune endorsement for White House (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will pick up the endorsement of Senator John Thune in Iowa later on Wednesday in a boost to his campaign for the 2012 White House race, a local newspaper reported.

The Sioux City Journal said Thune, a highly respected two-term senator from South Dakota, would endorse Romney at an event at 10 a.m. (11 a.m. EST) in Iowa, a key state which holds the first nominating contest on January 3.

The former Massachusetts governor has been running high in the polls among Republicans and Thune's backing will be a fillip to his campaign.

"Mitt Romney has shown throughout his life in the private sector, as leader of the Olympics, as governor and in this campaign that he will not back down from difficult challenges," the paper quoted Thune as saying in a statement that was not available on the senator's website. "Washington could use these common sense principles at such a critical time."

The paper said the two Republicans would hold a town hall event in the afternoon, adding it was unclear still whether Thune would campaign in Iowa on behalf of Romney again in advance of the Iowa caucuses.

"He will be a trusted adviser as I bring this message to voters, to work to reverse President (Barack) Obama's failed policies and reform Washington," the paper quoted Romney as saying.

Romney has remained steady on about a quarter of the Republican vote in polls and is favored by pro-business Republicans. But he is also viewed skeptically by some conservatives because he was governor of liberal Massachusetts and is a Mormon, a religion some evangelicals do not consider Christian.

Protection from severe malaria explained

Monday, November 21, 2011

Why do people with a hereditary mutation of the red blood pigment hemoglobin (as is the case with sickle-cell anemia prevalent in Africa) not contract severe malaria? Scientists in the group headed by Prof. Michael Lanzer of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Heidelberg University Hospital have now solved this mystery. A degradation product of the altered hemoglobin provides protection from severe malaria. Within the red blood cells infected by the malaria parasite, it blocks the establishment of a trafficking system used by the parasite's special adhesive proteins ? adhesins ? to access the exterior of the blood cells. As a result, the infected blood cells do not adhere to the vessel walls, as is usually the case for this type of malaria. This means that no dangerous circulatory disorders or neurological complications occur. The research study has been published in the journal Science, appearing initially online.

In the 1940s, researchers already discovered that sickle-cell anemia with its characteristic blood mutation was particularly prevalent in certain population groups in Africa. They also survived malaria tropica, whose course is usually especially virulent. With malaria tropica, the malaria parasites (Plasmodia) enter the person after a bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. The mosquito first multiplies in the person's liver cells and then infects the red blood cells (erythrocytes). Once inside the erythrocytes, they divide again and ultimately destroy them. The nearly simultaneous bursting of all infected blood cells causes the characteristic symptoms, which include bouts of fever and anemia.

Adhesins on red blood cells cause circulatory disorders

In patients with malaria tropica, neurological complications such as paralysis, seizures, coma and severe brain damage also frequently occur. This is caused by an anomaly of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. It forms special adhesins that reach the cell surface of the infected blood cell. Once there, it causes the erythrocytes to adhere to the vessel walls, preventing them from being recognized in the spleen as damaged and removed from circulation. The parasite's protective mechanism results in smaller vessels closing, becoming inflamed and for example, prevents parts of the nervous system from being adequately supplied with oxygen.

In humans with mutated hemoglobin, these complications occur in a weakened form or not at all. "At the cell surface of infected erythrocytes with mutated hemoglobin, there are significantly fewer adhesins of the parasite than in normal red blood cells," explained Prof. Lanzer, Director of the Dept. of Infectious Diseases, Parasitology. "For this reason, we had a closer look at the trafficking system within the host cell." To this end, the team compared the blood cells with normal hemoglobin and two hemoglobin variants (hemoglobin S and hemoglobin C), which occur in around one-fifth of the African population in malaria-infected areas.

Trafficking system of the malaria parasite visualized for the first time

In so doing, the scientists used high-resolution microscopy techniques such as cryoelectron tomography to discover a new transport mechanism. The parasite uses a certain protein (actin) from the cytoskeleton (cellular skeleton) of the erythrocytes for its own trafficking network. "It forms a completely new structure that has nothing in common with the rest of the cytoskeleton," explained Dr. Marek Cyrklaff, group leader at the Dept. of Infectious Diseases, Parasitology and first author of the article. "The vesicles with the adhesins reach the cell surface of the red blood cells directly via these actin filaments."

In contrast to erythrocytes with the two hemoglobin variants, here only short pieces of actin filaments are found. Targeted transport to the surface is not possible. "The entire transport system of the malaria parasite is degenerated in these blood cells," Cyrklaff added. Laboratory tests showed that the hemoglobins themselves were not responsible for this, but rather a degradation product, ferryl hemoglobin. This is an irreversibly damaged, chemically altered hemoglobin that is no longer able to bind oxygen. The hemoglobins S and C are considerably more unstable than normal hemoglobin. As a result, blood cells with these variants contain ten times more ferryl hemoglobin than other erythrocytes. This high concentration destabilizes the binding of the actin structure and it disintegrates.

"With these results, we have now described a molecular mechanism for the first time that explains this hemoglobin variant's protective effect against malaria," Lanzer said.

Is Russia's malfunctioning Martian moon probe dangerous? [VIDEO]

If controllers are unable to repair Russia's Phobos-Grunt probe, which was intended to fly to a moon of Mars but is instead stranded in Earth's orbit, it will eventually crash back to Earth. The probe contains toxic flues as well as a small amount of radioactive material.?

Russia raced on Thursday to salvage a spacecraft bound for a moon of Mars that is stranded in the Earth's orbit, with just days left before the window closes on its first interplanetary mission in 15 years.

So far Russian controllers have failed to establish contact with the $163-million, unmanned probe, leaving little hope of recovering the ambitious mission that was to reassert Russia's place at the front lines of space exploration.

Following the launch from Russia's Baikonur launch pad in Kazakhstan early on Wednesday, the Phobos-Grunt probe is stuck in a dangerously low orbit, creating a drag that could eventually send it crashing back to Earth.

Russia's space agency said it had at least three days to try to fix the problem and steer the craft on to its correct path, and will make another attempt when it passes over Baikonur later today, a spokesman said.

Failure so soon after lift off in the three-year mission to bring back soil -- "grunt" in Russian -- from the Martian moon Phobos would be a major blow to the pride of the Russian space industry, adding to a humiliating series of setbacks.

"So far all efforts to communicate with the craft have been unsuccessful," lead mission scientist Alexander Zakharov of Moscow's Space Research Institute told Reuters.

"They are trying everything including visual methods to try to assess what is wrong with it, but of course the situation doesn't inspire much hope."

Experts say the post-launch problems are linked to the craft's on board flight computer, which failed to fire two engine burns to send it on its trajectory toward Mars.

There is a small chance the software could be reprogrammed, if controllers can link with the craft. But if the troubles are hardware related, the mission is likely lost, Zakharov and other industry sources said.

Russia is relying on a single ground site to try to reach the craft once every few hours along its orbit.

"In my opinion Phobos-Grunt is lost," Vladimir Uvarov, a former chief Russian military expert on space, told the state-run Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

China also could be disappointed after entrusting its first interplanetary Mars satellite, Yinghuo-1, to piggyback on the mission.

Phobos-Grunt is also carrying bacteria, plant seeds and tiny animals known as water bears, part of a U.S. study to see if they could survive beyond the Earth's protective bubble.

The plan was for Phobos-Grunt to reach Mars' orbit next year, touch down on the larger of its two tiny moons in 2013, collect a sample from the surface and fly back to Earth in 2014.

Dust from Phobos, scientist say, would shed light on the genesis of the solar system and Mars' enduring mysteries.

If it is lost, it will join a long string of over a dozen Soviet and Russian missions to fail en route to Mars, while U.S. rovers have logged hundreds of hours on the Red Planet.

When the first post-Soviet Mars-96 probe broke up over the Pacific, it was seen as a proof of the industry's deterioration after a generation of brain drain and crimped budgets.

NASA will launch a $2.5 billion rover designed to assess the planet's suitability for life later this month, toward the end of a launch window for Mars flights that comes every 780 days.

If Phobos-Grunt cannot be bounced out of orbit, the massive craft will eventually crash back to Earth with a full payload of toxic hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide fuel and small cargo of radioactive cobalt-57.

It is unclear how much of it will survive the fiery plunge through the atmosphere.
