Sedona AZ (June 7, 2012) ? Dozens of artists, artisans, and collectors are celebrating and supporting the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park by donating wonderful works of art for the Sunday, June 10, art gala fundraising silent auction at Tlaquepaque, sponsored by Rene Restaurant. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Proceeds will go to secure the Amitabha Stupa and the land it rests upon.
The fundraising gala is one effort to secure this beautiful property for visitors now and in the future. ?During this uncertain financial time, we are committed to securing this property for generations to come,? says Jane Perini, a co-chair for the art auction gala. ?It is so important to have powerful places like this in the world?places of peace and comfort we can go to, where we can meditate and pray, and just find a peaceful sanctuary.?

At a White House news conference five months before Election Day, the president also said Republican allegations that his administration has leaked classified information for political gain were offensive. He said his administration has "zero tolerance" for any such practice.
Republicans fired back quickly on Obama's comments on the economy, particularly his insistence that "the private sector is doing fine" when it comes to job creation.
Campaigning in Iowa, Republican rival Mitt Romney said Obama's view was "defining what it means to be detached and out of touch."
From the White House podium, the president urged passage of legislation that he said would create jobs - proposals that Republicans have long blocked.
"The recipes that they're promoting are basically the kinds of policies that would add weakness to the economy, would result in further layoffs, would not provide relief to the housing market and would result ... in lower growth," said the president, who is locked in a close campaign for re-election.
Obama's tone was markedly different when it came to European leaders, whom he prodded to inject money into the banking system. He also said it is in "everybody's interest for Greece to remain in the eurozone," despite the division of public opinion inside the country where austerity measures have been imposed to deal with out-of-control deficits.
"The Greek people also need to recognize that their hardships will likely be worse if they choose to exit from the eurozone," Obama said.
"The solutions to these problems are hard, but there are solutions," he said.
The president spoke after several days of difficult turns for his re-election prospects, including last Friday's report that the unemployment rate had risen slightly to 8.2 percent in May as job creation had slowed, and new signs that the European debt crisis was hurting the U.S. economy.
In the overtly political realm, Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker turned back a recall movement led by organized labor, while former President Bill Clinton stirred controversy by saying Obama should be ready to sign a short-term extension of all expiring tax cuts - including those that apply to the wealthiest taxpayers that the president has vowed not to renew.
The president's attack on Republicans was part of his campaign playbook in an election in which the economy is the top issue. Romney is campaigning for the White House as better equipped to created jobs, and polls make the race a close one, with only about a dozen battleground states in dispute.
Said McConnell: "The economy would respond much more favorably to providing the tax certainty Americans deserve by extending all the tax rates and assuring employers they do not have to budget for the largest tax increase in American history next year."
Obama's opening remarks were part jawboning and part economics lesson.
He stressed the importance of a strong European economy, saying, "If there's less demand for our products in places like Paris or Madrid it could mean less business for manufacturers in places like Pittsburgh or Milwaukee."
The president said that if Congress had passed his jobs bill from last fall, "we'd be on track to have a million more Americans working this year, the unemployment rate would be lower, our economy would be stronger."
"Of course Congress refused to pass this jobs plan in full," he said dismissively. "They left most of the jobs plan just sitting there, and in light of the headwinds we are facing right now I urge them to reconsider because there are steps we can take right now."
Congress approved an extension of the payroll tax, which Obama said was helping the economy, but Republicans balked at calls for additional spending to provide funding for teachers, school construction, highways and more, citing concerns about the deficit.
The president said U.S. companies actually have been creating jobs at a faster clip than they did after the previous recession while state and local governments have been shedding them.
"Where we're seeing weaknesses in our economy is in the state and local governments, often times cuts initiated by governors or mayor who are not getting the kind of help they got in the past from the federal government," he said.
"If Republicans want to be helpful, if they really want to move forward and put people back to work," they should enact legislation to permit the hiring of more teachers and law enforcement personnel, he said.
As for leaks of classified information, Obama said his administration has "zero tolerance" for it. Lawmakers are investigating recent leaks of sensitive information about the covert drone and cyberwars against terrorism. Republican Sen. John McCain has accused the Obama White House of leaking the information to bolster the president's standing on national security grounds.

A behind-the-scenes video shows "The Hobbit" actors and crew hard at work inside the studios.

There are a couple of glimpse of the movies themselves, including a look at actors on the set just before they begin filming a scene in the troll?s cave (the camera tantalizingly cuts away just before shooting begins), as well as footage of the ensemble filming the sequence in which hobbit Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf companions escape elf stronghold Mirkwood by floating down a river in barrels, and a brief sighting of a dwarf walking through a forest that is on fire.
The video begins again with director Peter Jackson, this time driving into the Stone Street Studios, which is otherwise closed to the public during filming. (The area was also a production site for the ?Lord of the Rings? trilogy and Jackson?s version of ?King Kong.?)
?It kind of feels a bit like I?m driving the tram through Universal Studios,? Jackson says later as he points out the various buildings to the camera.
Actor Luke Evans, who plays a character named Bard the Bowman in "The Hobbit," takes viewers on a tour of trailers on the set, which are labeled with character names like Bilbo and Dwalin. Evans brings the camera crew to the trailer of ? among others ? actor Aidan Turner, who plays dwarf Kili, and actor Peter Hambleton. Hambleton, who plays dwarf Gloin, offers viewers before and after scenes of his two-hour prosthetics transformation.
A stunt crew with lime green swords are seen battling it out outside the studio, some partially in costume.
Swordmaster Steven McMichael starts talking to the camera crew and is promptly mock-speared in the neck with one of the plastic swords.
?I just died,? he informs the camera, then continues. ?This is the intensity we like to bring on set every day.?
A tour of the costume department reveals the creepily named ?flesh factory,? where fat suits are constructed for the actors playing the dwarves, and artists John Howe and Alan Lee, who originally drew the covers for the "Lord of the Rings" series and now work on the films, greet the camera. Then the camera crew is taken on a tour through the model-making area, where small versions of many sets are created. (One model is blurred out with a red prohibited sign over it reading ?Film 2.?)
Second assistant director Bruno Du Bois brings the camera crew onto the set before the troll cave scene, just in time to see actors Richard Armitage, who plays dwarf leader Thorin, and actor Ian McKellen, who portrays wizard Gandalf, cross in front of the camera. Piles of gold objects and craggy rocks can be seen making up the set.
?Now we?re just going to, ssshh, walk away,? Du Bois tells the camera as filming is about to begin, and the camera swings outside, followed by a sequence of actor Martin Freeman, who plays hero hobbit Bilbo Baggins, being spun in a barrel on wheels.
Members of the crew playing a very competitive ball game that resembles foursquare can also be seen. ?Do not give in, do not make eye contact,? one of the players tells the camera about the game.
The camera crew is also given a tour of Weta Workshop, where creative director Richard Taylor lists the tasks accomplished there, including ?molding, spraying, trimming, sanding."
For those wishing for more celebrity sightings, the video ends with a happy surprise. Actor Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and is reprising his role in "The Hobbit" series, is found with Jackson. Jackson asks, ?What are you doing?? Another camera then shows Bloom, holding the original camera and filming Jackson.
?I?m filming the blog,? Bloom tells his director.
?Shouldn?t you be killing Orcs or something?? counters Jackson.

Op-ed contributor David Cortright says 'many of the obstacles to a negotiated peace agreement could be reduced if the US were to apply to peace even a portion of the resources it now devotes to war.'

EnlargeIf all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, to paraphrase psychologist Abraham Maslow. United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta arrived in Afghanistan today, where America?s policy toolkit has been mostly military. More than 90 percent of expenditures related to Afghanistan are channeled through the Pentagon, and so Washington looks mostly for military solutions to the problems there.

Why do policymakers in the United States continue to view Afghanistan through the lens of war when what the country needs most is a focus on peace?
At the recent NATO summit in Chicago, the US military allies confirmed that they will withdraw most of their troops by 2014, but the US plans to maintain a residual military force to train and support Afghan security forces as they battle the insurgency. This will ?Afghanize? the war, lowering US casualties and costs but maintaining military operations to kill and arrest insurgents.
The problem is that counterinsurgency policies have not been able to defeat the Taliban over the past decade, and it is doubtful that they will be more successful with fewer troops in the years ahead. Armed conflict is likely to continue with no end in sight, and could lead to renewed civil war. If this were to occur, civilian suffering would increase, and gains in social development and women?s rights would almost certainly be lost.
Most modern wars end through negotiated peace agreements not military victory. If a peace accord could be reached in Afghanistan this would bring security and stability to the country and reduce the appeal of armed militancy in the region. Research shows that peace processes are most successful when they are comprehensive and inclusive, with strong international backing. The chances of success also improve when agreements are monitored and policed by third party peacekeeping forces.
