Google trends: Roger Federer, Neil Armstrong, Samsung

Google+ users are buzzing about Federer, mourning the passing of Neil Armstrong and debating the most recent Apple vs. Samsung ruling on Monday, August 27.?

World tennis number one Roger Federer takes on America's Donald Young later on Monday in the men's singles at the US Open, leading Google+ users to share clips of Federer's past victories and debate what the outcome of the match will be.

Google+ users are also mourning the passing of astronaut Neil Armstrong who made history as the first man to set foot on the moon. To mark the passing of Neil Armstrong, Google + users are sharing video clips of the historic moon walk and interviews given by the astronaut in his later life. Neil Armstrong passed away on August 25 in Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of 82.

Also causing a buzz Monday is the latest Apple vs. Samsung court ruling. The two companies are fighting various patent infringement law suits against each other around the world, however Apple gained the upper hand on Friday when a jury in California ruled that Samsung will have to pay Apple one billion US dollars in damages.

The ruling, while not a crippling financial blow to Samsung, could have a huge effect on other ongoing Samsung / Apple patent infringement cases and potentially alter the future of smartphone design as other manufacturers alter their devices to avoid any future legal conflicts.

The top 5 most talked about topics on Google+ on August 27 at 9:30 AM GMT are:

6 Activities for Self-improvement and Personal Growth | Life ...

?It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.??Leonardo da Vinci

There are people who constantly grow, develop and learn new things. People who are sure that knowledge, skills and new experiences enrich their lives and make them better. People, who have goals and do things in order to reach them.

There are also others?

Those who are stuck at the same level. Those who work at the same place for ages because they are ?loyal? to the company. Those who did not read or learn anything new after their graduation because they ?did not have time? and were ?too busy?. Most of them do not change anything because they don?t want to leave their comfort zone.

Since you are reading this post I am absolutely sure that you are from the first group, because otherwise you would most probably read Cosmo or Maxim instead.

So you are as addicted to knowledge as I am?

Then most probably you too enjoy the below activities, which contribute to personal growth.

1.??? Read

Some believe that any kind of read is very useful and from absolutely any book there is a lot to learn. Maybe that?s how it was before, when there was no self-publishing and what we read assured minimum level of quality.

Now I would encourage you to read selectively. If done so, fiction and non-fiction as well as good blogs will assist you in your journey to personal growth.

2.??? Take online course

Fortunately now there are no limitations and you can get any resources in subjects you are interested in. There are plenty free resources as well, so lack of money is no longer a barrier. It does not matter in which part of the world you live either, since with Internet we all seem to be everywhere.

3.??? Do brain workouts

Brain is a muscle, which needs stretching from time to time. Intellectual games (Sudoku, crosswords, etc.) and puzzles ensure the workout your brain needs.

Play Sudoku and word games, solve riddles and put together a puzzle once in a while. Your brain will appreciate that. ?

4.??? Travel

There are so many amazing places to see, so many interesting people to meet and so many new experiences to have.

Visiting different countries will help you realize how colorful, diverse and interesting the world really is. Each trip will bring new friends, new emotions, knowledge and memories.

More you see broader you will think more open-minded you will become and easier you will overcome cultural differences.

No matter where you go and how much you stay your trips will add value to the way you see things.

5.??? Create

Everyone is creative. We all were born with equal amount of creativity. Look at children and you will see!

Later life happens and the creativity in most of us falls asleep. And we end up thinking ?wow, I wish I could write too? I wish I could paint too? I wish ? I wish??.

You know what? Stop wishing and start acting.

You do not need a falling star for that. All you need is desire.

Go ahead. Doodle something, write?few lines, sing along, take photos? anything?

Simply call back the sleeping creativity and wake it up. Give it a chance and you?ll see what happens.

6.??? Spend time alone

I have written about the benefits of spending some time alone in post called 8 Simple Ways to Enjoy Loneliness. It is my most popular post so far btw.

Spend time alone to go back to your life events and evaluate your values, actions and thoughts. Or try to find out new things by asking yourself these 50 questions.

This was the list of things that help me move forward, self-improve and grow.

What about you? Feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions in comments.

Wish you permanent personal growth and self-improvement!

A Fresh Appreciation of Technology and the Internet | Business 2 ...

Sleep mask

You may not have noticed, but I?ve been gone for three weeks. Oh, I?ve been around, but a few weeks ago I decided to take a week-long blogging sabbatical to take care of some family matters. And then I got sick, and one week turned into three weeks. In retrospect, I needed those three weeks off to recharge and give myself a bit of a rest. Three years of blogging every day can certainly take a toll on you. But this less than voluntary break did take its toll on me.

In some ways, I really missed blogging, not just for the writing component of it, which I love, but also because of feeling disconnected from my blogging community. The members of that community have become a part of my daily life, and much of our online conversation takes place in the comments of various blogs. When that?s not happening, I definitely feel a void.

But while being disconnected for much of the time, and only on social media platforms for a limited amount of time, I gained a new sense of appreciation for the role that technology and the Internet play in our lives. Here are a few of my thoughts and observations:

1. The importance of connections ? When you?re laid up in bed for a bit, the outside world seems far away. While I didn?t get online much, I was touched by the private messages I got from a number of friends wondering what was wrong. I couldn?t always respond, but it was nice to have people checking in on me. The importance of this for those who are truly confined to their homes for longer periods of times or permanently is undeniable.

As for my family, my wife was down in NC with her parents for a week with no Internet access at all. The ability to text each other throughout the day was what kept us both sane.

And since I get Twitter DMs pushed to my phone, I even had the chance to meet a few online friends who were swinging through my town for a short period of time. Even though I felt horrible, it was worth dragging myself out of bed to meet them.

2. The importance of online information ? During the past month the Internet was a great source of info, from researching local retirement communities and nursing homes (not for me!) to laying in bed trying to figure out what was wrong with me, and to find the only 24-hour pharmacy in our area. When you?re in major pain in the middle of the night, you don?t want to lay in bed until morning in order to get your antibiotic and painkiller prescriptions!

3. The importance of mobile ? While I was laid up in bed, I didn?t have my computer, so in the middle of the night I was limited to my small 5? Samsung Galaxy Player (Android). It was a lifesaver. As I searched the Internet for information, I was grateful for mobile optimized sites, and painfully reminded of how difficult it is when a site you want to use doesn?t work well on mobile devices. The increased and rapid pace of mobile adoption by users makes it that much more important for businesses to make sure that their websites are ready for this shift. It?s already happening.

4. The failure of directory sites ? I?ve never been a fan of the online Yellow Pages or other directory sites, but my experiences during this time made me dislike them even more. Trying a simple search for ?24-hour pharmacy Lancaster PA? was excruciating. I kept getting directory lists of what SHOULD have been 24-hour pharmacies, but we only have one in the area. The directory listings did nothing but give me more lists of pharmacies, whether they were open 24 hours or not.

If you have a website, do your own optimization for search engines, and don?t waste your money on directory sites. Google is already a directory. Those directory sites do nothing but muddy up the digital waters.

5. The rapidly changing entertainment landscape ? During the past month, Netflix has been my best friend. My 5? tablet is perfect for watching videos, playing Words with Friends, and keeping up with other forms of entertainment, including the Olympics. Convergence is happening, and recent studies from Pew and others are showing some rather exciting possible futures for television and the entertainment industry. It?s pretty darn exciting, and we can?t even fathom where all of this will be in the next five years.

So I?m glad to be back, heading into a very busy Fall season with my work load and a heavier than normal teaching load. I?m looking forward to it, and now that I?m back on the blog, I?m also looking forward to really reconnecting with all of you.

Have you ever taken an involuntary break from the Internet and social media? Did it give you a new appreciation or fresh perspective on technology?

Quotes from AP interview with Obama

Some quotes of President Barack Obama in an interview with The Associated Press:

___

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that. But Governor Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class." ? On why a struggling, undecided voter should vote for Obama.

___

"I don't really know him well. I think that the big arguments that I have with Governor Romney have to do with where we take this country forward." ? On whether Obama holds any disdain for Romney.

___

"When I look back on 2008, the promises that I made ? I said I'd end the war in Iraq; I did. I said that I'd go after al-Qaida and bin Laden; we did. I said that I'd give middle-class families a tax cut; they're paying on average about $3,600 less than they were when I came into office. I said that I would make sure that every American family has some security when it comes to health insurance; we got it done. ... So we haven't gotten everything done that I promised, but a big chunk of what I said I would do in 2008 we have done." ? On his record of his term in office.

___

"... His view of how we grow an economy is just contradicted by the facts. He has embraced an approach that we tried for almost a decade, and it didn't work. And he's now looking to double down on it." ? On what he has learned from Romney's campaign.

___

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations. What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about." ? On what Obama believes Romney stands for.

___

"Governor Romney obviously has achieved extraordinary success with his businesses, and he's obviously very focused on achieving the presidency. He cares deeply about his family, and I think he cares deeply about his faith." ? On Romney's background.

___

"The small bits of disclosure that he has put forward indicate investments in the Bahamas, or Swiss bank accounts, that indicates to me a lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails." ? On Romney's disclosure of tax returns.

___

"My sense is Governor Romney is a very capable debater. I think he did a very good job in his primary scoring points. The challenge he may end up having is the fact that some of the core arguments he's making against me just aren't based on facts." ? On Romney's abilities as a debater.

___

"...The American people will have voted. They will have cast a decisive view on how we should move the country forward, and I would hope that the Republican Party, after a fulsome debate, would say to itself, we need to listen to the American people." ? On how Obama would try to break a stalemate in a second term.

___

"For me to be able to say to the Republicans, the election is over; you no longer need to be focused on trying to beat me ... I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises, some of which I get criticized from the Democratic Party on, in order to make progress. But we're going to need compromise on your side as well. And the days of viewing compromise as a dirty word need to be over because the American people are tired of it." ? On how Obama would pursue a second-term agenda.

Increase Your Success With These Article Marketing Techniques ...

Increase Your Success With These Article Marketing Techniques

Is it true that articles can promote your business? Will you be able to find what you need to make it successful for you? A number of webmasters are already achieving great success with their article marketing plan by using it to effectively drive traffic to their website, and you can join their ranks by using the tips in the following article.

Promote your earlier articles in your more recent articles. You can link words in the current article to past pieces you have written. If your article is full of advice or helpful information, this is considered acceptable. Don?t be afraid to tell people how great your articles are!

Article Marketing

Hold your ideal reader in mind when you write and try to phrase your article as though you were speaking with a trusted friend. A friendly tone will make your articles easier to read. A conversational style to your article will give it a relaxed feel.

Staying current with online writing tools will improve your ability to produce good marketing prose in your articles. You can save your energy, time, and money by using the products that are coming out everyday related to article marketing. Get all the help that you can. Remember that article marketing is competitive!

Your articles need to be written with a high level of proficiency. Always submit work that you are proud of. Your website will gain trust and respect if the content is of high quality.

Submit as many quality articles as you can. Postin articles on a blog requires consistency. To successfully promote a single keyword, submit a multitude of articles that contain it. For competitive keywords, a minimum of five articles must be submitted to the directories, and the public blog networks must receive ten if you intend to see good results. Then follow that up with fifty articles to private blogs to improve your ranking further.

The headlines of your articles should make the reader want to find out more. People often skim headlines until they find something that grabs their attention. One way to write a compelling headline is to pose a question to your audience, so they have to read the article to find the answer. Make people emotionally invested in reading your article.

Ensure that the title on your article convinces people to come and read it. Make them think as they read your headline. The more you can engage the reader, the more likely they are to keep reading.

Including a strong, attention-grabbing opening in each article is essential. Base your hook on the article content.

You should not flood indexes with articles which contain identical content. There are countless article indexes to take advantage of with an article marketing strategy. A common trap is to submit an article repeatedly to hundreds of indexes. Doing so these days is just a waste of time. The engines are all wise to that trick and no longer rank these sorts of links heavily when determining ranking.

Do not use more than 5 sentences per paragraph and make sure the article is not more than 700 words. Most directories follow the 3-5 sentence/500-700 word criteria for article submissions, and applying it to your writings will ease the distribution of the articles. Blogs do not need to be as lengthy, so approximately 350 words is appropriate.

Use keywords within the titles of your articles. By having the important keywords in the title, viewers will be able to quickly spot your article and follow the link to see the entire content.

Many websites will publish your articles and pay you as well, via pay per click or pay per view. The articles you publish can provide multiple avenues for passive income. You can become very prosperous.

Article Marketing

Blogging is one of the best new ways to market your business; a blog can help you secure a place as a thought leader in your industry. Make articles that show who you are and promote your role as a professional and a leader. Talking about current trends in your industry will help customers and potential customers see that you are on top of things.

Article marketing isn?t a market that contains rarefied knowledge. If some guru tries to sell you a ?secret method?, run away screaming. Doing your own research can really make a difference. Just note that it?s simple, marketing that is handled through any content distribution is article marketing.

One way to increase sales derived from article marketing is to keep one keyword your main focus throughout the article. Use the keyword wherever possible, in the header, title, sub-headings and in the URL if possible. Also, use the keyword throughout the body of the article. By placing your keyword throughout your page, you increase the chance that a search engine will find your article.

Tips in article marketing can give you a great start in building your online presence and increasing your audience. Follow these tips to start having the results you want

If your content is worth linking, you will receive more backlinks from other webmasters. You may want to fill up your site with spun content. Be careful though, because if your articles have no value, webmasters will not share them, leaving you to get backlinks without any help. Writing useful and high quality content will attract other webmasters to share your content with their customers.

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, Keith Teare, Kevin Marks, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor ? planted a big fat one on Google +'s new Circle Notification sliders. These babies mean Google + conversations may now encourage self-filtering, rather than waiting for an API or Twitter killing off any more partners. @scobleizer made a good case for Facebook's new iOS native app, and along the way explained why Zuck was not driving the company into the turf. @kteare indulged his fantasy of a one-app-does-all future, while @kevinmarks demurred and @jtaschek explored what appeared to be the inside of Scoble's head. Syria accused of 'massacre' as 100s of bodies found

Hundreds of bodies have been found in a town outside Damascus after a ferocious five-day assault by the Syrian army, a watchdog said on Sunday, as activists accused government forces of a "massacre".

At least 320 people have been killed during the offensive by government troops in Daraya, a satellite town of some 200,000 people to the southwest of the capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground in Syria, described it as "the regime's massacre" in "peaceful Daraya".

"The criminal regime imposed a blockade and cut off necessary supplies to the town, then subjected it to indiscriminate shelling with heavy weapons and warplanes," it said.

"Afterwards the gangs of killers entered the town and carried out summary executions, before dismembering and setting fire to the bodies."

Activists had described the onslaught against Daraya as a new bid to crush "once and for all" the insurgency in the capital after rebel fighters regrouped to the southern outskirts following an army offensive in the heart of the city last month.

The reports by the activists cannot be independently confirmed because of severe restrictions on media operating in Syria.

At least 183 people were killed nationwide on Saturday, the Observatory said, as the brutal conflict that has convulsed Syria for 17 months showed no signs of abating in the face of deep divisions among world powers.

Combat helicopters and tanks also pounded rebel-held areas of the battered northern city of Aleppo, an AFP journalist and monitors said, as the army pressed on with its war against fighters seeking to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

Militants put out on YouTube a video titled "Massacre at the Abu Sleiman Addarani Mosque in Daraya" showing dozens of bodies on the ground.

The video, whose authenticity could not be verified, had a commentary saying: "An odious massacre committed by the gangs of ther Assad regime in the Abu Sleiman Addarani Mosque. More than 150 innocent martyrs fell in a brutal campaign by the criminal gangs against the city."

State television had said on Saturday that Daraya, a mainly Sunni Muslim town, was being "purified of terrorist remnants."

The army claimed to have retaken most of Damascus in late July, after about two weeks of intense fighting across the capital's southern belt.

Most rebel Free Syrian Army fighters were forced out into the nearby countryside, but have since resumed hit-and-run operations, according to activists.

Saturday's bloodletting erupted a day after new international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi admitted he was "scared" of the enormity of the task he faces to try to end the increasingly ferocious conflict, now in its 18th month.

Brahimi, who takes over from former UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan next month, held talks with UN leaders in New York on Friday, saying the Syrian people "will be our first masters."

Annan, a former UN chief, quit earlier this month after the failure of his six-point plan to try to bring peace, which was left in tatters by the relentless bloodshed and divisions among world powers over how to tackle the conflict.

In Aleppo, an AFP correspondent reported heavy shelling by tanks in several neighbourhoods, sending civilians scrambling for safety as exploding shells sent up clouds of smoke and dust.

Rebels said earlier this week they controlled 60 percent of Aleppo but the regime has dismissed the claims and said Thursday the army had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods, where residents are largely pro-Assad.

Opposition fighters said they were digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, the once thriving commercial hub where the regime had warned last month of "the mother of all battles."

"The situation? They are trying to advance in the area, we're holding them back, but there are a lot of wounded and martyrs," said one rebel commander in Saif al-Dawla neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, the body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed this week during a gunfight in Aleppo was flown home on Saturday.

Mika Yamamoto, 45, was the fourth foreign journalist killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fierce fighting erupted in the city last month.

An American, a Turk and a Jordanian journalist of Palestinian origin are still missing.

August is already the deadliest single month of the conflict with more than 4,000 people killed, according to the Observatory.

It says around 25,000 have been killed in the 17-month revolt, which began as a peaceful uprising against Assad's rule but has descended into a bloody civil war.

The United Nations puts the death toll at more than 17,000 -- up sharply from the 9,000 it reported when Annan's ill-fated ceasefire was first introduced in April.

Damascus has said it is ready to work with Brahimi and voiced hope he could pave the way for "national dialogue," while also suggesting it was ready to discuss Assad's exit as part of any negotiated solution.

An Iranian delegation was in Damascus for talks with Syrian officials, after Tehran -- the regime's staunchest ally -- said it would submit a plan for ending the conflict at a Non-Aligned Movement summit next week.

Tehran's initiative comes as its foes in the West seek to ramp up the pressure on Syria, with Washington and London threatening possible action if Damascus uses its chemical weapons and Paris voicing support for a partial no-fly zone.

International concerns are also mounting over the humanitarian crisis both in Syria and neighbouring countries after the United Nations said that the flow of refugees fleeing the fighting has jumped to at least 202,500.

Scarlet Motors promises an open EV design process

Scarlet Motors launching today, promises an open EV design process

It's not every day that you see a new EV manufacturer get started; it's even less common when the company promises a switch-up of the typical automaker's formula. Scarlet Motors has made its formal debut with an aim towards the same kind of openness in its electric sports cars that founder Julien Fourgeaud would be familiar with from his days at Nokia and the Symbian Foundation. In addition to giving a peek behind the curtain, Tesla-style, Finland-based Scarlet wants future (and eventually current) drivers to influence the design choices themselves, both through a dedicated community as well as Facebook and Twitter. We'll get more details in time, but those that just can't wait can sign up to the community beta and help shape what might become their next ride.
