Abdul Rehman denies doping reports ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part II ? October 3, 2012

Pakistan off-spinner Abdul Rehman on Tuesday rubbished the reports of taking performance enhancing drugs.

"Frankly speaking I really don't know how this test has come positive because I don't remember taking any medicines or prohibited items that might contain banned substances," said the 32-year-old Pakistan spin bowler.

The left-arm orthodox bowler from Sialkot was apparently tested for prohibited drugs during his stint with English county Somerset, and the ECB is likely to sanction him within the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board has withdrawn him from Sialkot Stallions squad, which is due to represent the country in the just to begin Champions League T20 in South Africa.

Former England captain Sir Ian Botham said on Wednesday that the lengthy stand-off between Kevin Pietersen and his adopted board ECB (England and Wales Cricket), should have been sorted out in its initial stages, in August.

ECB and Pietersen, on Wednesday reached an agreement over a process for latter?s reintegration in the national side, however it is still unclear when will the veteran batsman return to the England team. But legendary England cricketer Sir Ian Botham believes Kevin Pietersen?s return to the national side, after a gap of almost three months, would not be smooth one.

"This should have been sorted out months ago," Botham told Sky Sports News today. "It's dragged on and on and it's very difficult for both parties, but that's for him to sort out. It needed to be nipped in the bud. It will be difficult now. He'll have some work to do," he added further.

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez on Tuesday lavished praise on rookie off-spinner Raza Hasan, for playing crucial role in Pakistan?s 32-run win over Australia, in a Super Eight match.

Raza Hasan claimed two wickets, including the scalp of danger man Shane Watson, while conceding just 14 runs in his spell of four overs, as Pakistan restricted the mighty Aussies to 117 for seven, while defending a mediocre 149 for 6. The victory earned Pakistan a wild card entry to the World T20 semi-finals, where they will now play hosts Sri Lanka, on Thursday.

"I am grateful to see the effort put up by the boys today," said Hafeez after his side?s 32-run win. "Raza Hasan was brilliant, a great find for us," he added further.

NASA Mars Curiosity rover prepares to study martian soil

ScienceDaily (Oct. 4, 2012) ? NASA's Curiosity rover is in a position on Mars where scientists and engineers can begin preparing the rover to take its first scoop of soil for analysis.

Curiosity is the centerpiece of the two-year Mars Science Laboratory mission. The rover's ability to put soil samples into analytical instruments is central to assessing whether its present location on Mars, called Gale Crater, ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. Mineral analysis can reveal past environmental conditions. Chemical analysis can check for ingredients necessary for life.

"We now have reached an important phase that will get the first solid samples into the analytical instruments in about two weeks," said Mission Manager Michael Watkins of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Curiosity has been so well-behaved that we have made great progress during the first two months of the mission."

The rover's preparatory operations will involve testing its robotic scooping capabilities to collect and process soil samples. Later, it also will use a hammering drill to collect powdered samples from rocks. To begin preparations for a first scoop, the rover used one of its wheels Wednesday to scuff the soil to expose fresh material.

Next, the rover twice will scoop up some soil, shake it thoroughly inside the sample-processing chambers to scrub the internal surfaces, then discard the sample. Curiosity will scoop and shake a third measure of soil and place it in an observation tray for inspection by cameras mounted on the rover's mast. A portion of the third sample will be delivered to the mineral-identifying chemistry and mineralogy (CheMin) instrument inside the rover. From a fourth scoopful, samples will be delivered to both CheMin and to the sample analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument, which identifies chemical ingredients.

"We're going to take a close look at the particle size distribution in the soil here to be sure it's what we want," said Daniel Limonadi of JPL, lead systems engineer for Curiosity's surface sampling and science system. "We are being very careful with this first time using the scoop on Mars."

The rinse-and-discard cycles serve a quality-assurance purpose similar to a common practice in geochemical laboratory analysis on Earth.

"It is standard to run a split of your sample through first and dump it out, to clean out any residue from a previous sample," said JPL's Joel Hurowitz, a sampling system scientist on the Curiosity team. "We want to be sure the first sample we analyze is unambiguously Martian, so we take these steps to remove any residual material from Earth that might be on the walls of our sample handling system."

Rocknest is the name of the area of soil Curiosity will test and analyze. The rover pulled up to the windblown, sandy and dusty location Oct. 2. The Rocknest patch is about 8 feet by 16 feet (2.5 meters by 5 meters). The area provides plenty of area for scooping several times. Diverse rocks nearby provide targets for investigation with the instruments on Curiosity's mast during the weeks the rover is stationed at Rocknest for this first scooping campaign.

Curiosity's motorized, clamshell-shaped scoop is 1.8 inches (4.5 centimeters) wide, 2.8 inches (7 centimeters) long, and can sample to a depth of about 1.4 inches (3.5 centimeters). It is part of the collection and handling Martian rock analysis (CHIMRA) device on a turret of tools at the end of the rover's arm. CHIMRA also includes a series of chambers and labyrinths for sorting, sieving and portioning samples collected by the scoop or by the arm's percussive drill.

Following the work at Rocknest, the rover team plans to drive Curiosity about 100 yards (about 100 meters) eastward into the Glenelg area and select a rock as the first target for use of its drill.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project and built Curiosity.

Small Business Consultant Tips - Commonwealth Watch

Below, we outline the actions leaders can take to turn around struggling firms. Before following these steps, ensure that you have a small business consultant to act as a partner throughout the turnaround process. An outside business consulting expert is crucial; she or he can offer an unbiased expert opinion that can bring new life into your business. Step 1: Get to Know the Business The first thing a turnaround leader or small business consultant should do is research the struggling business. A full facility tour, including meetings with all employees, managers, leaders and trusted advisors, should be conducted. The consultant needs to know the business' story - the reason for its inception as well as successes, advantages, procedures, intellectual property, core beliefs and failures. Next, the business consulting guru should put together a turnaround team within the organization. Step 2: Meet with Creditors, Customers and Suppliers Once internal customers are on board with the turnaround process, it's time to get the support of external customers and partners. Turnaround leaders should give these players a clear understanding of why the turnaround process is happening and what the company hopes to achieve. Step 3: Review Barriers to Business Success Next, the small business consultant and turnaround team should review major business obstacles. What problems are limiting performance? The business consulting expert should research each major issue. For instance, if being profitable is the main problem, the consultant should analyze profit and loss reports for every month of the last two years. While working with your small business consultant, be objective in your assessment of the data. Can you spot where the current trends started? This is also a good time to think about potential timing issues for reviving the business. Step 4: Zoom in on the Most Pressing Problems Next on the business consulting agent's to-do list: Figure out which problems will have the most influence on the turnaround situation. Gather feedback from employees, advisors, creditors, customers, suppliers, managers and c-suite executives on which are the most urgent issues. Brainstorm ways to resolve major obstacles. Whether you're reviewing financial processes or small business marketing strategies, look at the long term. Avoid stop-gap answers, and find solutions that will stick. Prioritize a list of solutions that can help the company overcome obstacles. Step 5: Find Opportunities It's not enough for the small business consultant to solve the problems in step four - he or she must also uncover previously under-appreciated strengths and opportunities. For instance, while talking to suppliers, the consultant might be able to arrange a better deal, leading to lower product prices and higher sales. Step 6: Research the Market and Customer Base Investigate whether the market will support your new approach. Market research techniques such as customer surveys and focus groups can help you tweak your small business marketing strategies. Reviewing the organization's current structure can help you determine if new ideas can be successfully implemented. For efficiency, select two or three opportunities and problems to start with - it's best if these objectives can be realized quickly to keep momentum going. Finally, don't quit as soon as positive results appear. Check in with the process consistently, and meet with your small business consultant regularly to review accomplishments and tackle new challenges.

Tep Wireless review anther great option for international mobile hotspot rentals

Traveling is great -- nay, amazing. And travel that requires a passport can be even more fulfilling for those willing to open their minds to new cultures (and, perhaps, deal with entirely too much security screening). But here's the thing -- travel is a lot better, generally speaking, with an internet connection within arm's reach. Things are never more likely to go awry than when you leave your comfort zone (or, you know, home nation), and we here at Engadget have been investigating the best methods for maintaining a connection whilst abroad for the better part of our lives. To date, you've got a smattering of options: rent a MiFi from XCom Global, pick up a rental SIM from iPhoneTrip, pray that you can find a shop that rents data SIMs upon your arrival or pony up for whatever absurd roaming fees that your home operator deems fit.

All of the above options have their pros and cons, but the good news here is that your choices are expanding. As the market for ubiquitous connections continues to grow, another player has recently entered the market. Tep Wireless began as a hotspot rental service that mainly looked after those traversing the United Kingdom, but recently, it expanded its coverage umbrella to include some 38 countries across Europe and 50 nations total. This here editor recently had the opportunity to cross through four of those on a single journey, with a Tep hotspot in hand the entire way. Care to see how things turned out? Let's reconvene after the break.

It might at first seem strange that the most popular YouTube videos are nearly exclusively music videos, with the exception of ?Charlie Bit My Finger,? an oldie in internet years. What about David at the Dentist? Where are the laughing babies and ninja kittens the wacky web is so well known for?

In truth, it does make sense that the top most viewed YouTube videos are music videos. It?s a common practice to use YouTube as a free computer DJ, rather than pay to download hit songs. Sure, there?s Spotify and Pandora, but when you need a song in a pinch, it doesn?t get much easier than YouTube. Most of the top YouTube videos are pop hits that are popular with younger generations, who would be even more likely to avoid paying to download music.

In this situation, the videos aren?t being watched so much because they are exceptional videos ? Just Bieber?s ?Baby? video is fairly unremarkable, unless you?re really into disco-tech bowling alleys. These videos are only being used for the audio component. In some sense, it seems almost unjust to mark these videos as ?most viewed? because in reality most probably are not being viewed at all.

Most Popular YouTube Videos: Comparing the Success Champions

A recent YouTube trends blog post compared Psy?s ?Gangnam Style? to ?Call Me Maybe,? as both have obtained immense popularity over the summer of 2012.

As YouTube blogger Kevin Allocca notes, the popularity of ?Call Me Maybe? has grown at a steady clip over the past six months, while Psy?s hit ?Gangnam Style? exploded over a shorter period, with a much steeper curve.

best-youtube-videos-gangnam-style

When this graph was created, "Gangnam Style" was trailing behind, but in recent days it has grown to beat "Call Me Maybe."

?

top-youtube-videos

?Call Me Maybe? has obtained a whopping 270 million views since it was first posted to YouTube on March 1. Remarkably, ?Gangnam Style? recently surpassed Carly Rae Jepsen?s pop sensation in just a few months, reaching over 300 million views since July 15.

?Call Me Maybe? has proven its staying power, with it?s poppy tune overpowering the airwaves all summer. Again, its popularity on YouTube is probably purely for its audio ? I doubt there are many people who could even tell you more than a handful of scenes from the music video. ?Gangnam Style,? on the other hand, definitely owes a healthy portion of its success to its wacky, incredibly bizarre video, although the mad beats certainly deserve a fair share of the credit.

Psy?s dynamic combination of unrelentingly catchy beats with possibly the strangest music video to date has made it the Internet phenomenon it is, with ?Gangnam Style? being recognized by Guinness World Records as the ?Most ?Liked? Video in YouTube History.?

Success by Sharing ? Parodies and Covers

Besides both being 2012 summer hits, what do these two popular YouTube video sensations have in common? Both have parodies spawning faster than bunnies in heat on Adderall. Many of the most popular YouTube videos, including ?Call Me Maybe? and ?Gangnam Style,? owe at least part of their success to their parodies and covers.

Carly Rae Jepsen?s hit ?Call Me Maybe? generated hundreds of parodies and personalized renditions, featuring celebrities, Olympic swimming teams, President Obama, and even Cookie Monster.

"Gangnam Style" Parodies

The potential success of encouraging ?fair use? is also illustrated in the immense success of ?Gangnam Style,? whose numerous and instantaneous parodies have obtained their own share of attention.

?

When a video has many parodies, it garners the attention of mass media outlets. Talk show hosts then end up discussing the interweb spin offs, bringing favorite parody acts on shows and multiplying a video?s virality.?

Another major factor that has contributed to both ?Gangnam Style? and ?Call Me Maybe? receiving worldwide recognition is attention from popular celebrities.

Carly Rae Jepsen has admitted that a positive tweet from Bieber about her song is what sparked the ?Call Me Maybe? wildfire. ?Gangnam Style? has also been buzzed about by multiple celebrities, culminating in Britney Spears performing Psy?s signature horse-riding move on The Ellen Show.

When musicians and recording studios encourage others to use their songs for personal creations, it often increases the song?s popularity. New listeners may even discover the original song through a subsequent spin-off. The encouragement of parody videos can allow listeners to become more personal with the song, turning it into an object of endearment.

The Ones That Got Away: The Lost Videos

It?s a shame studios sometimes remove popular skit videos because of legal issues, cutting off a video?s viral potential in its prime. If some popular SNL skits were still on YouTube, a few of them would probably be giving Bruno Mars a run for his money. Looking at YouTube?s most popular videos, it?s clear that one of the biggest keys to success is openness and minimal concern over infringement issues (we?re looking at you Apple).

Looking at the top most popular YouTube videos of all time, and examining their success, there are a number of factors that increase the chances of a YouTube video becoming a mega-hit:

  • Encourage parodies and covers
  • Be hopelessly odd
  • Mad beats
  • A tweet from a celebrity

While this is a difficult recipe for most businesses to stir together, just meeting one or two of these criteria can help you create a YouTube hit. Remember, your video will never reach 100 million hits. It?s just not going to happen. What most businesses want to shoot for is a viral video which becomes ridiculously popular in a short period of time, but doesn?t necessarily have lasting power. While creating a YouTube viral video hit is still extremely difficult, you don?t need to appear on Ellen DeGeneres to do it.?

Tips for YouTube Video Success: Humor

You?ll find the Top 25 Most Viewed Videos on YouTube list nearly devoid of humorous videos (again, with old Charlie breaking the status quo). If you were to ignore the music mega-hits, you?d find mostly humor and informational videos.

One technique that tends to find great success is humorous musical pieces- the combination of two paths to YouTube popularity.? The Lonely Island comedic musketeers have mastered this process, and continue to produce videos that jump to the top of YouTube. (Warning, this next video has some explicit, not-safe-for-work language)

Hopefully this examination of the most popular YouTube videos has given you some ideas about how to make your video a hit. Good luck!

Gambling exec: Online regulations unlikely in 2012

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? It doesn't look like Congress will pass Internet gambling regulatory laws this year, the head of the industry's main lobbying group said Tuesday, as he cast online wagering hosted by sites overseas as one of the biggest threats to the casino industry in the United States.

American Gaming Association chief Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. called online gambling "the next frontier of our business," but told reporters in Las Vegas that passing a measure such as one backed by Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Republican Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona would need quick action during the post-election congressional session.

"We will need plenty of hard work and a little gambler's luck to see a federal bill pass this year," Fahrenkopf said during his annual state-of-the-industry media briefing at the Global Gaming Expo. "Obviously, nothing is going to happen before the election. That means a lame duck (session) is our last chance."

Fahrenkopf, a former Republican party national chairman, said about 85 countries have legalized online gambling, and some estimates say almost $35 billion is being bet worldwide online each year, including many millions by people in the U.S.

"These are numbers generated with only minor participation by players in the U.S.," Fahrenkopf said, citing figures from an industry researcher, H2 Gaming Capital.

That compares with gross commercial gambling revenues in the U.S. of some $35.6 billion for all of 2011.

Meanwhile, casino revenues have increased this year in 18 of the 21 states that allow commercial gambling, Fahrenkopf said, and new casinos are opening in several jurisdictions. The figures don't include American Indian tribal gambling.

No matter which party wins the U.S. elections on Nov. 6, Fahrenkopf promised his association will keep lobbying Congress to create a legal framework for regulating online poker. Otherwise, he said, states will adopt a patchwork of rules and regulations that will make oversight difficult and put customers at risk.

"No matter what Congress does, based on the growth trends ... and the actions of the various states, it's no longer a matter of if online gambling will be legalized in the U.S., but when, where and how."

Nevada and Delaware began taking steps to allow online betting after the U.S. Justice Department last December narrowed the application of the federal Interstate Wire Act of 1961 only to sports wagering. Several casinos have been licensed in Nevada to offer online poker to residents within the state. Meanwhile, Illinois has begun selling lottery tickets online.

"We know there will be more states to come," Fahrenkopf said, including California and New Jersey.

Fahrenkopf said gambling revenues are up about 5.4 percent so far this year at brick-and-mortar casinos in the U.S, and more when revenues from two new casinos that opened in 2012 in Ohio are included.

Massachusetts is developing a regulatory structure for gambling, he said, and new properties are opening in other states, including Illinois. Voters in Oregon, Rhode Island and Maryland will decide gambling initiatives Nov. 6.

Eating disorders on the rise in children ? A Healthier Michigan

Information remains to be prevalent about eating disorders in adults and, on the flip side, the obesity epidemic in America.? However, slipping slightly under the radar is the increasingly high percentage of childhood eating disorders.? The focus has remained consistent on the need (which is valid) to counteract obesity in children and adults; nevertheless, a spotlight is needed on children who have become obsessed with the opposite end of the spectrum.

According to a study performed by the National Eating Disorders Association, it has been found that 42% of 1st to 3rd grade girls want to be thinner.? Additionally, 80% of all 10 year olds are afraid of being fat.? We are seeing an enormous insurgence of hospitalizations of children under 12 due to eating disorders.? Eating disorders, in general, have the highest mortality rate of any mental health disease in America.

As in any societal problem, there isn?t just one cause and there isn?t just one solution.? Eating disorders are complicated in general; however, when you add children into the mix, the issue not only becomes much more convoluted, but also more sensitive.? Some reasons that children are falling into eating disorders could be bullying at school, abuse, and divorce.? In addition, children with personality traits that include perfectionism, high anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive tendencies are at a far higher risk.? Restricting food intake creates a way, albeit unhealthy, for these children to feel in control of their lives.? In fact, such a high emphasis on obesity in our society has seemed to correlate with a high anxiety in kids to prevent weight gain.

The signs of eating disorders in children are not always universally apparent, but there are a few key characteristics to watch for.? Children who are suffering from or at risk of developing serious eating disorders might be cutting their portion sizes or avoiding fat calories.? They may also stop eating foods that were previously their favorites.? Children suffering from eating disorders will also experience symptoms similar to malnutrition, like low energy, low iron counts, and hair loss.? Getting help at a young age is the key to effective treatment of eating disorders.? In fact, it?s imperative for children to receive treatment before they hit puberty so as to allow the child to feel comfortable with the natural weight gain that occurs from puberty.

So what can we do?? The biggest influencers on children?s behavior are their parents and the mainstream media.? Restricting a child?s intake and exposure to media and certain shows only does so much in preventing the negative image message.

However, parents can be, and should be, the driving force behind transforming healthy kids into healthy adults.? Children pick up the majority of their thought processes about diet, weight, and image from the dialogue they hear from their parents and guardians.? For example, parents need to curb the talk about their diets and emphasizing being ?bad? with what they have eaten that day.? We need to open up the healthy lifestyle dialogue and welcome questions and concerns from children in order to promote education and prevention.

What healthy lifestyle choices does your family promote?

Climate Change Could Delay Fall Foliage Colors [Video]

It?s that time again: time to take a hike and enjoy the splendid fall foliage. Or, if you live in a tourist town like I do, time to see ?leaf peepers? driving their cars aimlessly throughout the countryside searching for a stand of incredibly red maples or golden oaks. If climate change continues on its present course, however, you might want to mark future calendars a bit later than usual for the best day to take that walk or ride.

Trees use a combination of cues to determine when to drop their leaves, but the two primary signals are the length of daylight, and temperature. Sunlight is the major factor; as trees sense fewer hours of light, they curtail photosynthesis in their leaves. Green chlorophyll fades, and colors emerge. Climate change has no effect on day length, but it does on temperature. If autumn days are warm, trees tend to delay the color change, and if autumn days are cool, they tend to hasten the pace. If global temperatures generally rise, you may need to take that walk a few days later. Indeed, Massachusetts officials have determined that the average peak color change has shifted about three days later over recent decades.

Climate change could also alter precipitation, which can affect colors as well. The amount of rainfall does not seem to be a factor, but more cloudy days lowers the level of daylight, which tends to lessen the intensity of a leaf?s color.

For more details, check out this video, produced by our partners at Accuweather.com. And if you?re driving through my town this fall, wave hello, but keep your eyes on the trees (I mean, the road).
