GUVECCI, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Monday the "worst-case scenarios" were now playing out in Syria and Turkey would to do everything necessary to protect itself, while its army fired back for a sixth day after a shell fired from Syria flew over the border.
Gul said the violence in Turkey's southern neighbor, where a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad has evolved into a civil war that threatens to draw in regional powers, could not go on indefinitely and Assad's fall was inevitable.
"The worst-case scenarios are taking place right now in Syria ... Our government is in constant consultation with the Turkish military. Whatever is needed is being done immediately as you see, and it will continue to be done," Gul said.
"There will be a change, a transition sooner or later ... It is a must for the international community to take effective action before Syria turns into a bigger wreck and further blood is shed, that is our main wish," he told reporters in Ankara.
Turkey's armed forces have bolstered their presence along the 900 km (560 mile) border with Syria in recent days and have been responding in kind to gunfire and shelling spilling across from the south, where Assad's forces have been battling rebels who control swathes of territory.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the escalation of the conflict along the Turkey-Syria border, as well as the impact of the crisis on Lebanon, were "extremely dangerous".
"SERIOUS RISKS"
"The situation in Syria has dramatically worsened. It is posing serious risks to the stability of Syria's neighbors and the entire region," he told a conference in Strasbourg, France.

"They have occupied buildings that we were stationed in and we had to evacuate," a rebel fighter told Reuters by Skype.
Skirmishes on the Syrian side of the border have been intensifying and it is unclear who fired the shells that have crossed into Turkey.
Damascus has said it fired into Turkey accidentally, but has failed to live up to pledges made last week, after a Syrian shell killed five civilians in the Turkish town of Akcakale, to ensure no more ordnance flies across the border.
Turkey launched its latest retaliatory strike on Monday after a mortar bomb fired from Syria landed in countryside in the Turkish province of Hatay, a Turkish official told Reuters.
The mortar round landed 150-200 meters inside the Turkish district of Hacipasa at about 3 p.m. (1200 GMT), the official said.
TRUCKS PATROLLING
Further east, Syrian rebel sources in Raqqa province, which borders Akcakale, said they had seen five Turkish army trucks full of soldiers patrolling the Turkish side of the border.
NATO member Turkey was once an ally of Assad's but turned against him after his violent response to the uprising, in which activists say 30,000 people have now died.
Turkey has nearly 100,000 Syrian refugees in camps on its territory, has allowed rebel leaders sanctuary and has led calls for Assad to quit. Its armed forces are far larger than Syria's.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said at the weekend that a potential leader in an interim Syrian government could be Vice-President Farouq al-Shara.
Reports in August said Shara, a former foreign minister who was appointed vice president six years ago, had tried to defect to neighboring Jordan, but Syrian state media subsequently said he had never considered leaving.
"The opposition is inclined to accept these names. Farouq al-Shara has the ability to understand the system of the last 20-30 years," Davutoglu told the state broadcaster TRT.
"Farouq al-Shara did not get involved in the recent incidents, the massacre, in a very wise and conscientious attitude. But perhaps there is nobody who knows the system better than al-Shara."

The first-ever year-long mission to the International Space Station will launch in 2015 and feature an American-Russian crew, NASA revealed Friday.
This flight, in contrast, is no test: The spacecraft is carrying 882 pounds (400 kilograms) of key science experiments and other precious gear. The cargo also includes a personal touch: Cups of Blue Bell chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream have been tucked in a freezer for the three station residents.
The company's unmanned Falcon 9 rocket roared into the night sky from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida right on time at 8:35 p.m. ET, putting SpaceX on track to reach the space station Wednesday. The complex was soaring southwest of Tasmania when the Falcon took flight.
Officials declared the launch a success ? even though one of the rocket's nine first-stage engines was lost during the ascent to orbit, due to an unspecified anomaly.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the Falcon 9's other engines compensated for the shutdown and put the Dragon capsule precisely where it was intended to go. "Falcon 9 was designed to lose engines and still make missions, so it did what it was supposed to do," Shotwell said. "We will learn from our flights and continue to improve the vehicle."
Later Sunday, SpaceX's billionaire founder, Elon Musk, said the engine failure had "no effect" on the mission.
In more good news, a piece of space junk was no longer threatening the station, and NASA could focus entirely on the delivery mission.
NASA is counting on private business to restock the space station, now that the shuttles have retired to museums. The space agency's $1.6 billion contract with SpaceX covers 12 resupply missions through 2015.
Especially exciting for NASA is the fact that the Dragon will return twice as much cargo as it took up, including a stockpile of astronauts' blood and urine samples. The samples ? nearly 500 of them ? have been stashed in freezers since Atlantis made the last shuttle flight in July 2011.
Due for three weeks in space
The Dragon will spend close to three weeks at the space station before being released and parachuting into the Pacific at the end of October. By then, the space station should be back up to a full crew of six.
None of the Russian, European or Japanese cargo ships can bring anything back; they're destroyed during re-entry. The Russian Soyuz crew capsules have limited room for anything besides people.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, is working to convert its unmanned Dragon capsules into vessels that could carry astronauts to the space station in three years. Other U.S. companies also are vying to carry crews. Americans must ride Russian rockets to orbit in the meantime, for a steep price.
Musk, who monitored the launch from SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., called the capsules Dragon after the magical Puff to get back at critics who, a decade ago, considered his effort a fantasy. The name Falcon comes from the Millennium Falcon starship of "Star Wars" fame.
Thousands watch launch
An estimated 2,400 guests jammed the Florida launch center to see the Falcon, with its Dragon, come to life for SpaceX's first official, operational supply mission. Across the country at SpaceX headquarters, about 1,000 employees watched via TV and webcast.
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden watched the launch from Florida. "Just over one year after the retirement of the space shuttle, we have returned space station cargo resupply missions to U.S. soil and are bringing the jobs associated with this work back to America," he said in a statement. "The SpaceX launch tonight marks the official start of commercial resupply missions by American companies operating out of U.S. spaceports like the one right here in Florida."
Every time SpaceX or a competitor flies successfully, Bolden told reporters, "that gives the nonbelievers one more opportunity to get on board and root for us" and help enable commercial launches for space station astronauts. This will further free NASA up to aim for points beyond low-Earth orbit, like Mars.
"This was a big night," Bolden said.
SpaceX's next supply run is due in January. Another company looking to haul space station cargo, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., hopes to launch a solo test flight in December and a demo mission to the station early next year. If NASA gives Orbital the go-ahead after its tests, the company would be in line for as much as $1.9 billion for eight resupply flights.
SpaceX is among several companies also working on spaceships capable of flying astronauts to and from the space station, starting in the 2015-2017 time frame. SpaceX plans to offer an upgraded version of the Dragon capsule. The other companies receiving NASA funding for developing human-capable spacecraft are the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp.

Jamaica?s new Minister of Education, Ronald Thwaites, promised a receptive crowd that school curricula would promote ?healthy heterosexual relationships.?
Recently, parents had expressed outrage that students as young as 11 were allegedly being asked about anal sex. To calm their fears, Thwaites explained, ?we are going to promote healthy heterosexual relationships, but with a tolerance and compassion for those who adopt a different lifestyle. There is a difference between grooming and conditioning, and being tolerant; and that distinction is quite possible for us to craft.?
But not everyone agrees with Thwaites: Health educators, argue that young men and women (even those as young as 11) are engaging in risky sexual behavior and need comprehensive sex ed.
Thwaites disagrees, saying ?the important thing is that we balance an appropriate exposure of sexuality and of human relationships to young people, but in an instance where you are not promoting and advancing a particular lifestyle which many consider to be inappropriate.?

LONDON (AP) ? In a remote fishing town on the tip of Scotland's Black Isle, the last native speaker of the Cromarty dialect has passed away, taking with him a little fragment of the English linguistic mosaic.
Academics said Wednesday that Bobby Hogg, who passed away last week at age 92, was the last person fluent in the dialect once common to the seaside town of Cromarty, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) north of Edinburgh.
"I think that's a terrible thing," said Robert Millar, a linguistics expert at the University of Aberdeen in northern Scotland. "The more diversity in terms of nature we have, the healthier we are. It's the same with language."
Cromarty, which counts just over 700 people, is at the very end of a sparsely-populated peninsula of forest and farmland. It's separated from Inverness, the closest city, by the Beauly Firth, a wide body of cold water where salmon run and dolphins frolic.
The Cromarty dialect included a helping of Biblically-influenced "thees" and "thous" as well as a wealth of seafaring vocabulary (including three sets of words for "second fishing line.")
The aspirate "h'' was often added or subtracted, so that "house" would be pronounced "oos" and "apple" would be pronounced "haypel." The "wh" sound was often dropped entirely.
A lexicon of Cromarty words, relying in large part on Hogg's speech, gave "Oo thee keepan?" as the town's translation of "How're you?"
The demise of an obscure dialect spoken by a few hundred people at the edge of Scotland may not register for most English speakers ? "we'll all live," Millar said ? but it's part of a relentless trend toward standardization which has driven many regional dialects and other local languages into oblivion. Linguists often debate how to define and differentiate the world's many dialects, but most agree that urbanization, compulsory education, and mass media have conspired to iron out many of the kinks that made rural speech unique.
Urban dialects may still be strong ? Millar referred to "Toonserspik," the "town speech" of cities like Aberdeen ? but he said they're don't replace what's being lost.
He explained that urban dialects tend to be more similar to one another than their rural counterparts, with an emphasis on differences in pronunciation over differences in vocabulary. And even rival cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh "sound more like each other than they used to."
Author Mark Abley, who has written about the dynamism of the English language, agrees.
"I don't believe there's a straightforward balancing-act in which urban dialects grow as rural ones shrink," he said in an email. "Cities are always melting pots, and isolation for any group is very hard to maintain."
As the worlds' melting pots grow ever bigger ? half the Earth's population now lives in cities ? lesser-known dialects like those from England's Forest of Deen to Scotland's remote island chains are evaporating.
Minor languages are melting away as well; the British Isles saw two go extinct within living memory, according to UNESCO.
The last native speaker of Alderney French, a Norman dialect spoken in the Channel Islands, died around 1960. The last speaker of traditional Manx, the language once spoken on the Isle of Man, died in 1974.
Donna Heddle, the director of the Center for Nordic Studies at Scotland's University of the Highlands and Islands, said the loss of each little language or regional dialect leaves the world just slightly poorer than it was before.
"It's one less little sparkle in the firmament," she said. "One little star might go out and you might never notice it, but it's not there anymore."
