Could you look down from 24 miles up and jump? Felix Baumgartner just did.

DID YOU WATCH! Did your heart pound, your palms get sweaty, your muscles tense! Did you join the millions around the world gripped by fear and tension as Felix Baumgartner rose to more than 24 miles in a balloon-lifted capsule, opened the door (OH MY GOD!) stood out on the bar outside with a camera over his head looking down (OH MY GOD!!!!!),?AND JUMPED!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAIIIGGH!

What a thrill! For Felix, sure, but for US too?sitting safely on the ground in our kitchens or living room or offices or wherever, glued to a TV or computer screen, riveted by and connected to one of the most gripping fears humans experience, the fear of heights, as no human has ever experienced it, viscerally feeling the fear even as we sat safely, firmly on terra-thankfully-very-firma, watching. What a FANTASTIC demonstration of the animal wiring of the human brain when it comes to fear.

~~~
When you ask people what scares them the most, fear of heights ranks high on the list. Endangering people by putting them at great heights is a common tool for evoking fear in movies and TV shows like Fear Factor. The toughest challenges in those personal development ?ropes courses? are always the ones where you have to climb up a tree or tower (wearing a harness, but that doesn?t matter) and jump off. Fear of heights makes tons of money, from bungee jumping, to that glass-floored walkway out over the Grand Canyon, to the millions that people are willing to pay to go to the top of the tall buildings of the world for A) the view and B) the scariness of being up that high. The CN tower in Toronto will charge you $175 for the EDGE WALK thrill of edging out to the edge of the tower (!!!) and, tethered to a rail over your head, hanging your bottom backwards out OVER THE EDGE OF THE BUILDING!!! (No extra charge for looking down. It?s unclear if there?s a charge if you lose your lunch. Tip if you?re in Toronto. Even if it?s not raining, take an umbrella if you walk under the CN Tower.)
As common as acrophobia is, then, it?s small wonder that tens, probably hundreds of millions of people just watched Felix Baumgartner to do what would scare the living BEJEEZUS out of most of us?jumping out of an ascent capsule at 128,000 feet/24.25 miles/39,014meters?(not literally the edge of space, far from it, but media likes to take that freedom with the facts). The event was watched live on You Tube by 8 million people, almost 20 times more than had ever watched anything live on that global village before. I was one of them. Notes during the final moments;
~~~

He?s going through final preparations for jumping. My palms are sweaty. Twitter friend; ?I am more likely to pee my pants watching Felix jump, than he doing it??

Mission control says ?Item 14. Move seat to the forward position.? My heart is racing. Another Twitter friend; ?Group fear huddle. Engage!?

MC; ?Okay we?re getting serious now Felix.? !!! Sound from the capsule of pressurizing his suit! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!???? (Wide shot of balloon from the ground. Looks like it?s going to burst. AAIIGH! Heart pounds harder!)

MC ?From now on?our Guardian Angel will take care of you?!? The global supply of human stress hormones is at an all time high.

OMYGOD THE DOOR IS OPEN!!!! Another Twitter friend ?This is Excruciating?

MC: ?Release seat belt.? HOLY CRAP!!!!! Breathing noises from Baumgartner?s microphone?.breathing fast!!! Wish there was telemetry on his vital signs. WHAT IS GOING ON IN HIS BRAIN!? He?s got to be one stressed animal!

Feet outside over the edge!!!! MY palms are dripping wet! Heart pounding.

Standing on the bar OUTSIDE !!!! His voice is thin, fast. Arms out, salutes. Lets himself fall. Takes off like a rocket!

YOU HEAR HIM breath!!!!!!!!! Twitter friend ?WOAH. Hearing him breathing is so terrifying!?

He?s TUMBLING, falling like a toy!!!! OUT OF CONTROL!!!! More than 700 mph! OH My GOD! Twitter friend ?Unreal. Hearts stopped in my house.?

The PARACHUTE IS OPEN!!!!! Felix says ?Gorgeous!!!!?? Applause in mission control. I am next to tears. Live feed shows his mom crying. I BURST into tears.

He touches down. More control room cheers, tears from Mom, and me.

Twitter messages.

?group hug of relief?

?WOW that was amazing?

From a friend watching in Florence ?My friend Baumgartner you are one crazy dude. What a thrilling ride Love it.?

?UnbeLIEVABLE!?

?snif. Bravo Baumgartner.?

?Holy crap that was the most riveting & insane few minutes I?ve EVERY seen. I think I must have held my breath the WHOLE time!?

~~~
What was all that emotion about? Those twitter comments, by the way, came from bright, educated, science journalists who, like me and the immense global community that was joined together in this common intense experience, felt fear in precisely the same way. The amygdala, an area of the brain down near the brain stem that triggers the ?Fight or Flight?/fear response, knew there was danger in what we were watching, if not to us then to a fellow member of the human tribe, and HIS experience became ours. The amygdala triggered the release of glucocorticoids and other stress hormones that made our hearts race and our palms get sweaty. It turned down our immune systems, reduced production of sperm and bone cells, and literally increased the urge to void our waste; (Twitter comment:?I may pee my pants just watching!?) These are all part of the autonomic response to any signal of potential danger, and you could literally watch these responses happening as people commented on what they were feeling as they watched.
We weren?t in danger, of course, so it shouldn?t have been scary to us rational beings, right? Nope. That?s not how risk perception works. The way we perceive and respond to risk is a combination of the facts of the situation (We?re on the ground. We?re safe? and the feelings (WE ARE WATCHING A FELLOW HUMAN JUMP OUT OF SOMETHING 24+ MILES HIGH!) As is almost always the case with risk perception, the feelings win. Thank you, Felix, for reinforcing the lesson that we are hardly as smart/rational/cognitively in charge powerful as we?d like to think we are. Reason takes a back BACK seat at times like these.
What a thrill it was to watch. How compellingly real it became for all of us, who are not members of Baumgartner?s family or circle of friends, when the camera showed the faces of Baumgartner?s mother and family, tense at first, raising our tension, then crying with relief, evoking our shared tears. That offers yet another important piece of evidence from this fabulous demonstration of risk perception?confirming that a risk is far more compelling/scarier when it is personified, than is a risk we experience only as an idea or a bunch of facts and figures (e.g. climate change). How terrifying it was to watch him tumbling out of control while falling at hundreds of miles an hour?reinforcing the finding from risk perception research that any risk evokes more fear the less control we feel we have.
When we catch our breath there will be many more lessons from this exciting human adventure. One of them certainly is how we are all connected, social human animals, by the neural architecture and chemistry?and emotional nature?of risk perception.
(AP) ? In the midst of watching his team rally with 14 points in the final 7? minutes, Seattle coach Pete Carroll forgot about his history as a one-time coach of the New England Patriots.
He was too busy celebrating Seattle's unlikely comeback and a starring performance by rookie quarterback Russell Wilson.
"That's funny that you even bring that up. I hadn't even thought about it. You know, that was a long time ago, and there have been a lot of games," Carroll said. "I really love Robert Kraft, he's a great man and he's been great throughout the years about our separation, of sorts. I respect the heck out of him. But, I'm a competitor, and heck yeah I want to win against those guys."
Wilson found Sidney Rice behind the secondary for a 46-yard touchdown with 1:18 remaining, and the Seahawks rallied for 14 points in the final 7:31 to stun the New England Patriots 24-23 Sunday.
Wilson hit Braylon Edwards on fourth down for a 10-yard TD to get the Seahawks within 23-17. After a pair of holds by Seattle's defense, Wilson found Rice streaking open on a double move for his third touchdown pass of the game. Steven Hauschka's extra point gave Seattle (4-2) the lead with 78 seconds remaining.
Tom Brady had a final chance to make up for all the opportunities the Patriots (3-3) squandered. Starting at his 20 with 1:14 left, Brady missed Brandon Lloyd then was sacked by Jason Jones, the first sack all day by Seattle. His pass for Aaron Hernandez, back after being out since Week 2 with an ankle injury, was incomplete, and Wes Welker was stopped short on fourth down.
That's when the celebration started for the Seahawks, who pulled off yet another late stunner at home after their controversial win over Green Bay last month.
"There were some times where we got put in some bad positions and we needed to bail them out," Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said. "They bailed us out of some tough situations so it works and in hand. Everybody did their part."
Wilson finished 16 of 27 for 293 yards, the best day of his young career. He added Brady to an impressive list of quarterbacks he's topped this year: Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton. It was also the fifth time in six games Wilson found himself in a late drive with the game on the line.
"I think I'm always comfortable no matter the situation, I think I'm just more experienced," Wilson said. "Being in those situations you have to trust what you see, you have to be quick with your decisions, but also believe in your decisions and just be decisive with the football."
Brady finished 36 of 58 for 395 yards and touchdown passes of 1 yard to Hernandez and 46 yards to Welker in the first half. Welker had 10 catches for 138 yards, his fourth straight game over 100. Brady topped 300 yards passing for the 49th time, but was intercepted in the second half by Sherman and Earl Thomas after going 179 attempts without being picked off. One of Brady's interceptions came in the end zone, squandering yet another for the Patriots.
New England came away with just one touchdown in six trips inside Seattle's 20. The most damaging came at the end of the first half when coach Bill Belichick opted to throw with 6 seconds remaining instead of kicking the field goal from the Seattle 3. Brady was flagged for intentional grounding and the ensuing time runoff ended the half.
"You lose by one point and here are a lot of things we could have done better to not be in that situation," Brady said.
New England dominated statistically. They rolled up 475 total yards after Seattle had not allowed any opponent more than 300 this season. They ran 85 offensive plays to Seattle's 55 and went eight straight drives without punting.
Brady's day tied for the second most completions and was the most attempts in any game of his career. Welker tied Jerry Rice with his 15th career game of at least 10 receptions and more than 100 yards receiving. Brady also topped 300 yards for the 49th time in his career to move into a tie for seventh all-time with Warren Moon.
But all those missed scoring chances came back to bite the Patriots late after they were forced to punt on two of their final three possessions and left to watch Seattle rally.
Seattle's winning touchdown came after Carroll showed confidence in his defense. The Seahawks went three-and-out with 3:20 left and Carroll risked never seeing the ball again and punted.
Even though Seattle had three timeouts and the two-minute warning, it was still a risky proposition.
"I wasn't surprised. As a defense we want the game on our shoulders," Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner said. "We have the confidence in us; we know Pete has the confidence in us."
Seattle forced the Patriots into just their fifth three-and-out of the season and only 14 seconds elapsed before Zoltan Mesko punted. Leon Washington returned the punt 25 yards and Seattle started its winning drive at its 43.
Wilson faked a handoff and looked deep. Rice was on an option route, and the coverage directed Rice to the middle. After faking to the outside, he was wide open.
"It was a heck of a throw. When I came out of my break, the whole time I was looking at the ball in the air and it was so pretty," Rice said. "I was just running, I was like 'You've got to catch up to it, you've got to catch up to it,' and I was able to track it down."
NOTES: Seattle P Jon Ryan averaged 60 yards per punt on four punts. According to the team, he is the first punter since 1946 to average at least 60 yards per kick in a game. ... Hall of Fame DT Cortez Kennedy had his No. 96 retired during a halftime ceremony. He joins Steve Largent (No. 80), Walter Jones (No. 71) and Seattle's 12th Man crowd (No. 12) as the only retired jerseys in team history. ... Hernandez finished with six receptions for 30 yards.
Caledonia Police warn about new computer fraud | Racineuncovered
Caledonia police are warning the public about a new computer scam.
The scam involves a company calling to tell you that your computer isn?t working properly, promises to fix your computer, and charges you for the service, but they never fix it.
Two Caledonia residents have fallen victim to the scam.
According to Caledonia police:
On Monday, a woman told police that a man named Nate Stevens, a representative from Windows Technology, called her to tell say her computer was sending out viruses, which was illegal. She was told the company would repair the computer for $180. The woman told the representative that $180 was too much, and Stevens reduced the price to $150.60.
The woman then gave him the company her credit card number. Stevens told the woman that he would refund the money if she wasn?t satisfied and gave her a toll-free number to call. The computer work never got done and when the woman called the number, the person told her he wouldn?t give her the money back.
Both the salesperson and Stevens had a Jamaican accent, the woman told police.
When the woman brought the computer to Best Buy, they told her nothing was wrong with the computer. However, they fixed 22 viruses and took spyware off of it. Best Buy didn?t charge the woman.
She reported the incident to her bank, which refunded the money to her. They told the woman the payment was sent to a company called Solutions for Tech.
In September, a woman called the police to report a similar experience with the same company, but a message popped up on her computer screen indicating that there was a video driver problem. A link then directed her to Microsoft, which gave her instructions on how to fix the problem. However, her screen went black and she wasn?t able to fix it.
City to announce expansion of NOLA Wise Energy Efficiency Initiative
On Monday, the City of New Orleans will announce that the NOLA Wise energy efficiency program is expanding to serve commercial clients and offer a loan program to help local businesses make energy-saving improvements. This builds on the services and loan program already offered to New Orleans homeowners.
NOLA Wise helps property owners navigate the home improvement process from start to finish. After completing an initial property assessment to determine how energy efficiency could be improved, property owners are provided with an inventory of suggested improvements. These might include new insulation, tuning up the heating and cooling systems, improving lighting, and sealing windows and doors to reduce air leaks. If needed, the program also provides help in obtaining incentives and loans to make the changes. NOLA Wise also provides specially trained and certified contractors to do the improvements. The program monitors their work to ensure quality.
Readers hot for erotic books in Frankfurt - The Local
Flush with the success of "Fifty Shades of Grey," erotic literature is increasingly finding ardent fans among women seduced by the discretion afforded by ebooks, publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair say.
"The Perfect Submissive," "Body Temperature And Rising" and "Dark Desires," the titles published by British specialist publisher Xcite leave little room for doubt over their content.
The books were unashamedly on display in the bustling corridors of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's biggest publishing event due to close Sunday, and are enjoying a boost thanks to the advent of the electronic book.
The erotic book is "an ideal genre for ebooks", said Peter Ferris, non-executive director at Accent Press, whose imprint Xcite is the biggest British erotica publisher.
"Print book sales were starting to decline. Getting into the major book stores was difficult. Some stores are not happy to take them and the buyers are very hard to reach," he said.
And then "Fifty Shades of Grey" came along.
The 2011 erotic novel by British author E.L. James was the first part of a trilogy about a relationship between a college graduate and a young business magnate and has sold tens of millions of copies worldwide.
Since "Fifty Shades of Grey" started to top the bestseller lists, ebook sales have undergone "a very large increase" and made erotic literature more publicly acceptable, Ferris said.
"It raised the attention level or people's awareness of erotica. It made it more mainstream, more acceptable. It's no longer something you don't talk about, it's in the bestsellers' charts," he said.
Xcite now expects its ebook sales to be three times higher than the printed book sales this year.
Germany's Jolanta Gatzanis, editor in charge of erotic literature at the publishing house that bears her name, said ebooks had been flying off the digital shelves, and without having to be promoted.
"We sold a lot of electronic books this year without doing much publicity. That really surprised us," she said.
In Germany, no fewer than 4,000 erotic reference books for adults are currently available on the Internet, albeit of varying quality, said Roman Jansen-Winkeln, of Satzweiss, a services' provider for publishers and authors.
"There are some of good quality but a huge number of books of very mediocre quality which would have never been printed. A bit like for thrillers. But if a bad thriller can still be quite amusing, there's nothing worse than bad erotic literature," he said.
This genre of books is predominantly read by women, the publishers agreed. Jansen-Winkeln said he believed more than 80 percent of readers of erotic
literature were female.
"We don't actually see the gender of the customer but... the writing itself is aimed at women, and it's written mostly by female authors who are writing for women," said Ferris, of Accent Press which also publishes thrillers and cook books.
Discretion could be the key.
With no cover on display, an ereading device such as a Kindle makes the literature anonymous to the outside world, Giada Armani, who heads up erotic literature publishing house Giadas.
"I think that women have always wanted to read erotic literature. But what woman brandishes an erotic book in the underground or at work whose cover displays the silhouette of a naked man?" she said.
And, as Ferris pointed out, the reader can also retain their own anonymity by downloading ebooks without having to go into a shop.
"You can even erase it once you're finished so nobody knows what you've been reading," he said.
Movie review: Hellbound? | canada.com
Religion has actually convinced people that there?s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of 10 things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these 10 things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ?til the end of time. But He loves you.? ? George Carlin
And that, in a nutshell, is the paradox of Hellbound?, a documentary investigation of the idea of eternal damnation ? metaphor or actual place of brimstone? ? in modern Christian thought.
Actually, ?thought? is a pretty big word for some of those included in Kevin Miller?s wide-ranging exegesis. For instance, the movie is bookended by a group of people gathered outside a 9/11 memorial who carry signs reading ?God?s Wrath? or ?Soldiers Die, God Laughs.? Miller talks to them at length, and what we get are some aggressive and angry assurances that amount to the fact that everyone but them will burn forever.
Others take a more measured approach to what we can learn from the Bible, or from earlier religious ideas. There seems to be scriptural evidence to support many points of view: the idea that some will be damned to suffer eternal conscious torment; that those who are not saved will instead be annihilated; or the tenets of ?universalism? that proclaim that even those who go to hell retain some chance of salvation.
That?s the view of Rob Bell, whose book Love Wins caused an uproar in the Christian community ? Bell was labelled a heretic for even raising the question ? and provides a kind of subtext for Hellbound? The concept of hell is central to religion: Trying to eliminate it, in the words of screenwriter Robert McKee (an atheist, but an expert in the idea of ?narrative?), is ?a wussy effort by some people to make God a nice guy.?
Miller talks to a dizzying array of experts ? as well as some heavy-metal musicians who sport Satanic artifacts and one of whom says ?All the fun stuff is in hell? ? and uncovers some convincing historical evidence that ?hell? is a relatively recent construct that perhaps owes some of its lore to the valley of Gehenna, near Jerusalem, where the bodies of children were burned. One theologian points out that ?hell? is not mentioned at all in the Old Testament.
Lazar Puhalo, a hierarch in the Orthodox Church in Canada, postulates that hell is the fire of malice that we feel here on Earth, and that we are at our most human when we respond to the suffering of others. A Catholic theorist, Peter Keeft, says ?there?s a surprising amount of wiggle room? for the damned who want a second chance.
A U.S. pastor named Chad Hurtz, who was fired from his post for questioning hell, rejects the idea that a loving God does not condemn people to hell but rather than they choose it themselves. He calls it ?the C.S. Lewis move,? referring to the author and Christian apologist who said that if there is a hell, the lock is on the inside.
It?s a wide-ranging and thoughtful debate that nonetheless seems to be taking part in a closed circle of believers, some compassionate and some vengeful. Like most things in religion, those who are surest of God?s word seem to be those who are the most frightening and the least in touch with the putative principles of their beliefs. You may not get the answer to the existence of hell, but you?ll learn to beware of those who start sentences with, ?The Bible is very clear ??
Do You Have Any Questions? Preparing ... - Business 2 Community
When getting ready for an interview, it is important to not only prepare yourself to answer the questions you may be asked, but also questions that you can ask the people who are interviewing you. Many job seekers get so excited about finally getting an interview opportunity that they forget that interviewing is a two-way street. Yes ? you need to make sure that this company and job are a good fit for you! Otherwise, you?ll be going through the job search process all over again when you (or the company) realize that it just wasn?t a good fit.
But like with every other aspect of the job search process, the questions you ask during an interview can make a good or bad impression on the person with whom you are interviewing. First and foremost, asking no questions will leave a bad impression. Early on in the interview process, asking questions about salary, benefits, vacation time, dress code, holidays, etc., can come across as petty or self-interested.
Whenever I?ve interviewed for a position, I?ve always asked questions that enable me to connect with the interviewer by showing an interest in their personal story. The following questions will help you both connect with your interviewers, and also give you the type of insight you need to determine if this is the job for you.
  1. What brought you to this organization? It?s always interesting to hear what attracted someone else to a company. It gives you some insight into what?s important to them and how they view the company?s strengths and employment brand.
  2. How would you describe the company?s culture? The answer to this question will show you if the company is fun or stuffy; team oriented or every-man-for-himself; hardworking or laid back; creative or old school.
  3. What do you like about working here? This one is pretty self-explanatory ? the answer will give you insight into what?s great about working at the company ? identifying its strengths as an employer.
  4. What one thing would you change about the company? I love this question ? it?s a tough one ? but it should provide you with an idea of what the company could stand to improve on. You?ll get an honest answer or you?ll watch the interviewer fumble through it like a job seeker with the ?greatest weaknesses? question. Either way ? you?ll walk away with insight into what the company could do better.
Using these questions will help you connect with the people you are interviewing with and get the answers you need to make your decision should you get an offer. What other questions have you found important to ask in the interview process?
