martin.ashu: Open Yourself Up to Pain/Loss ? Anytime Fitness ...

With yesterday?s tragic spa shooting in Brookfield and so many people going through trauma and challenges in their own lives, thought this might be helpful to us all. Take a step back and really open yourself up to the pain and/or loss. Will it control your life and bring you down? Or, will it change you for the better? What will you choose?

Written by: Gabe Martinez, the owner and main author of the blog ImprovemenTools, where he writes about self-improvement and gives his readers tools to help them grow.

Pain and loss is a reality that we all have to deal with in our lives from time to time. It can control our lives and bring us down, or it can actually cause us to change in good ways and make us better.

It?s easy for us to want to push aside our negative feelings and not acknowledge their existence. We want to feel good and be happy all of the time.

And there?s nothing wrong with wanting happiness.

But what if when pain, heartache, or loss strike us, they can actually change us to make us better people? And what if it can help us deal better with future occurrences of pain?

Back in 2007 on the day after Christmas, I lost my best friend of many years to a brain tumor. Naturally, much grief and pain followed for quite some time. I became hopeless, I felt powerless, and I felt overwhelmed.

I also felt confused and I started wondering why these sorts of things happen.

At one point I could tell that these feelings were beginning to have a solid grip on my life. They were able to dictate how I acted and felt about similar situations.

That?s when I realized that I needed to make some positive changes, despite such negative circumstances.

Realize that good comes out of all bad

This is probably the first thing that helped me to deal with my grief and heartache. Realizing that good can come out of bad situations is a powerful realization.

I said to myself there must be a reason that humans feel such horrible feelings.

Though these feelings are considered ?bad? and ?negative,? they are really our allies.

Grieving and heartache means we are filled with love

It reminds us of how much we love others, which triumphs over all negative feelings. For most of us negative feelings are temporary, and feelings of love for our friends and family are permanent. Realizing this helped me in dealing with the loss of my best friend. It reminded me that I loved him dearly, which brought me much comfort. I would be very worried had I not felt grief after his death. That would?ve meant that I didn?t love him like a friend. But the grief reminded me otherwise. This is one of the ways good things come out of bad situations.

By accepting these feelings instead of wanting to push them aside, we are opening ourselves to more love and good feelings. Using this fact will help us to grow, even during our heartache. It will also prepare us in dealing with future situations that bring sorrow.

Pain and sorrow are a transition to new opportunities

We know that life changes rapidly and unexpectedly. My life instantly changed the moment I found out of my friend?s passing. At one point I felt hopeless. But when I decided to use those feelings to my advantage, I flipped them on their head.

Dealing with loss is a period of transition. But it is a period of transition to new and greater things. During my period of grief, I transitioned to a period of personal growth. I was able to easily reach out to my friends and family who were experiencing the same feelings.

By doing this not only did I grow as a person, it made the process much easier and quicker for all of us. We were able to grow together. Keeping this mentality helped me to realize that it?s ok to feel these feelings instead of wanting to push them aside so quickly. Had I pushed them aside, I would?ve crawled up in a corner and not had the opportunity to grow closer to my friends and family. I would?ve missed out on the opportunity to grow.

Learn to welcome pain, heartache, and loss

It sounds kind of strange that I?m saying that we should welcome the pain. Who wants to welcome any kind of pain? Welcoming in this context simply means acceptance.

By welcoming the pain, sorrow, and loss we are accepting that it?s there. By acknowledging its existence, we are allowing ourselves to begin the process of getting through the transition phase.

Grieving allows you to get more in touch with yourself

Most people would want to get rid of the bad feelings as quickly as possible in order to jump right back to happiness. We?ll distract ourselves any which way like connecting more to our computers and phones, or maybe even resort to drug and alcohol abuse.

The reason I welcomed the grief and sorrow over the death of my friend is because it really helped me to be more in touch with myself and know myself better. Sure I could?ve distracted myself however I could, but looking into myself is another way to help me grow.

No one wants to feel these feelings, but when they do come (because they will) they can really help you to be more in touch with yourself, which leads to more learning and greater opportunities.

When it?s over, you will have a new and better outlook on life

Though I still have a hard time when I think about my friend, I have a different outlook on life. Here are some things that will help you turn bad times into an opportunity to get more out of your life:

  • Appreciate your loved ones more. Every relationship has its ups and downs. There are the occasional times when we fight with each other. But in the end you?re still friends. You never know when life will make a sudden change. One thing my friend?s passing helped to realize is that whenever I?m angry with any of my friends or family, I think about my best friend and realize that life is too valuable and short to be spending time fighting. I?d rather spend that time helping myself to grow as well as others.
  • Appreciate your own life. Sometimes we take our own lives for granted. Like
maybe spending too much time watching TV or lying around. My best friend?s life was cut short. This could happen to any of us. I realized that I should take advantage of any opportunity I have to be more productive and better my relationships and myself.
  • Realize your strength. I felt weak at the time of my friend?s death because I
decided to let my feelings control me. When I made the decision to turn that around and instead control my feelings, I realized how much strength I had. Growing as a person also means growing stronger. By accepting the hurt, going through the transition, and finally getting over it, you will have come out a much stronger person. This strength is not only beneficial to you, but it will help you to be strong for those who are going through rough times.

Pain, heartache and loss will always be a part of our lives and is sometimes unavoidable. But I hope that we can all realize the good that can still come out these times. It?s up to you to make the change and take the reigns to your feelings. But when you do, it will surely change your life for the better.

Here?s to choosing to?learn from?the pain and/or loss and in choosing to?opening up ourselves to allow it to make us?better. Have a great week everyone!

marjorie timidity: NAPA of Central Missouri - Billiards ...

Billiards has been around for a long time. ?So has competition. ?Billiard leagues combine these to make the sport competitive and fun. ?In the book PRECISION POOL by Gerry Kanov and Shari Stauch, they say "This is a sport, a game, a form of recreation enjoyed by millions of people. ?But it can be a difficult and frustrating ?sport for untold millions-and you- if you're not enjoying it. ?Accept the Challenges, embrace the difficulties, revel in the mastery of each new skill, no matter how trivial at first glance. There's not a professional player in all the pool circuit that will tell you they've mastered the art of cue sports. ?What they have mastered is the love of pool, and the thrill of discovery in a sport that will endlessly challenge them for as long as they weild a cue.We wish the same for each of you!"

I agree. ?If you are not having fun playing pool then you should find something else to do. ?You are always learning. ?You are always watching. ?You are always practicing. ?That is what NAPA is all about. ?You the player, becoming better, becoming more competitive, becoming part of a team, and becoming a leader, a teacher, a mentor. ?If you love something then it is easier to to tolerate frustration, enjoy competition, encourage friendship, and promote the game and the league.

I will be giving tips each week to help every level of player from those just beginning to those who think they have mastered the game. ?I will invite each of you to also give me your comments, suggestions, and remarks to make the blog, and the league, better.?

I look forward in starting this series and continue it as long as there is interest.

Statins may reduce risk of esophageal cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Statins, a cholesterol lowering drug may lower the risk of esophageal cancer, especially in patients with Barrett's esophagus, Mayo Clinic researchers report in a study being presented at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting.

There are two main types of esophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Barrett's esophagus, a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease, raises the risk of adenocarcinoma, the more common type of esophageal cancer. Barrett's esophagus is a precancerous condition in which the lining of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach, is damaged by stomach acid.

Although still uncommon, adenocarcinoma is on the rise in the United States. About 16,000 people are diagnosed with esophageal cancer annually, of which more than 60 percent are adenocarcinomas. Only 1 in 5 patients with this cancer will still be alive five years after diagnosis.

"Unfortunately, survival rates for this cancer are low, so prevention is critical," says Siddharth Singh, M.B.B.S., a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist and study author. "So these results are supporting and encouraging, but more research is needed before we recommend that patients at risk of esophageal cancer take statins."

The Mayo study combined data from 13 studies that included over 1.1 million patients, of which 9,285 had esophageal cancer. The analysis found statins lowered cancer risk by nearly one-third; the longer a patient was on statins, the greater the protective effect.

Researchers also looked at aspirin's effect on reducing the risk of esophageal cancer. When researchers looked specifically at Barrett's esophagus, patients taking a statin and aspirin reduced their risk of esophageal cancer by 72 percent.

The results, researchers say, support a protective association between statin use and esophageal cancer. Given the high mortality rates of the cancer, researchers say these results support randomized trials to evaluate statins in patients who are at high risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Along with Barrett's esophagus, other risk factors for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus include male gender, obesity and smoking.

Other study authors include Abha Singh, M.B.B.S.; Preet Paul Singh, M.D.; M. Hassan Murad, M.D.; and Prasad Iyer, M.D.

How To Become a Tree Surgeon

Picture this: birds singing, the sun beating down and the smell of freshly mowed grass. Welcome to the office of a tree surgeon. Working outside can be one of the most rewarding jobs - and most beautiful. And being a tree surgeon means you get to work closely with nature. There are many ways to become a successful tree surgeon - read on for some helpful tips.

What Do Tree Surgeons Need To Know?

There are many skills that a tree surgeon must have. Not only are they hired for felling trees, but also for pruning, planting, log removal as well as advice. It's important to know factual information about all aspects of trees and plants. This will allow you to diagnose any trees or plants that are diseased, as well as giving accurate advice.

Study, Study And More Study!

It's possible to become a tree surgeon without any qualifications. Working with a professional is a great way to gain experience. However payment is usually poor when an individual is working without any qualifications. There are a number of different certifications and accreditation certificates which can be achieved alongside work experience. Contacting the Arboricultural Association is best for more information.

Tree Surgeons Key Responsibilities

The most important thing a tree surgeon is responsible for is the health and safety of themselves and the people around them. Following correct procedures will ensure the work is carried out safely and effectively. It's important to remember to always keep your workstation clear. This refers to wherever you are tending to trees and includes removing logs and any other waste. It's a good idea to always have valid insurance documents ready for inspection by any customer.

It's Dangerous, But Someone's Got To Do It

Logging is considered the second most dangerous job, falling behind deep sea fishing. Certain elements from the logging occupation fall under the same category as tree surgery. The tools used are extremely powerful and must be used only with correct protection and under strict instruction. There are other risks, such as falling from a tree or being in the line of direction when a tree falls. Similarly, it is strenuous work and can leave individuals with long term health risks.

Getting Hired

The majority of tree surgeon companies are entrepreneurial or family-run and so tend to remain quite small. Applying for apprenticeships with smaller companies is a great way to gain experience on the job, but also have the opportunity to get a job at the end of the apprenticeship.

Wassells Aboricultural Services Ltd is a small family business with over 35 years experience working as tree surgeons in London. They provide an expert service in all aspects of tree surgery and management. For more on this tree surgery London visit http://www.wassells.co.uk/

In campaign of memorable debates, Obama and Romney face off again

BOCA RATON, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney face off in front of the cameras for a third and final time on Monday near the end of a presidential campaign season marked by a high number of memorable debates.

With 15 days to go until Americans vote on November 6, the two candidates turn to foreign policy for their last encounter at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. The 90-minute event starts at 9 p.m. (0100 GMT on Tuesday) and is moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS.

The stakes are high as the pair run neck and neck in the polls. Presidential debates have not always been consequential, but this year they have had an impact.

Romney was reeling from a series of stumbles when he entered the first debate in Denver on October 3, and his strong performance changed the course of the race, vaulting him back into an even position in the polls with Obama.

Democrats fretted openly about their candidate's timidity at the podium.

Then, Obama was ruled the narrow winner of the second encounter on October 16 when he got the better of Romney in a testy exchange over Libya. His campaign halted the slide but it was not enough to edge ahead in the polls. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey on Sunday put the two tied at 47 percent among likely voters.

Several times, debates marked turning points in the Republican primary race. Texas Governor Rick Perry's White House run effectively ended when he failed to remember one of three federal agencies he would scrap, in his infamous "Oops" moment in a debate.

Newt Gingrich presented Romney a serious challenge at points during the primaries, partly on the back of strong debate performances.

The former House of Representatives speaker won fans among Republicans by attacking moderator John King of CNN for asking him about an old extramarital affair at the start of a debate in January in South Carolina. Gingrich won the state's primary days later.

LAST-CHANCE DEBATE

Monday's debate is the last major chance for Romney and Obama to be seen by millions of voters before Election Day. More than 60 million viewers watched each of their previous two encounters.

If recent history is any guide, it is anybody's guess as to how the third face-to-face session will play out.

Despite a reputation for being wooden, Romney has shown an ability to rise to the occasion and perform well on stage.

The incumbent Democrat seems to have the upper hand on foreign policy since he has been in charge of U.S. national security for nearly four years. He gets credit for the mission that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden and for pulling troops from Iraq.

David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Center at Southern Illinois University, said Obama has two goals: show that "he's got nothing to apologize for in the way he has conducted foreign policy" and question the inexperienced Romney on foreign affairs.

China could be an issue for Obama to raise, said Yepsen, as Romney has vowed to crack down on Chinese trade policies if elected.

"He's got to really pin Romney down on what he means by some of the things he's saying. 'What do you mean when you say you are going to get tough on China? How do you go about doing that?'" he said.

A former governor of Massachusetts whose trip abroad in July to London, Jerusalem and Poland was marked by missteps, Romney has to assure voters he is a credible alternative to the president on the world stage.

Romney accuses Obama of presiding over a weakening in U.S. influence abroad.

"Many voters are ready to fire Obama if they see Romney as an acceptable alternative," said Yepsen. "Foreign policy has not been a big driver of this campaign but I think Romney could add some icing to his cake if people say, 'Hey, this guy is on top of world affairs.'"

The two men at their second debate last week clashed bitterly over Libya, a preview of what is to come on Monday. They argued over Obama's handling of an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

The Obama administration first labeled the incident a spontaneous reaction to a video made in the United States that lampooned the Prophet Mohammad. Later it said it was a terrorist assault on the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

This shifting account, and the fact that Obama went on a political fundraising trip the day after the attack, has given Romney ammunition to use at Monday's debate.

Critics have accused Romney of relying on generalities and platitudes - he has harkened back to Ronald Reagan's "peace through strength" doctrine - and he could be put on the spot if he resists providing specifics.

Romney has promised to tighten the screws over Iran's nuclear program and accused Obama of "leading from behind" as Syria's civil war expands and setting up a politically timed exit from the unpopular Afghanistan war.

The Republican is likely to bring up a report that the United States and Iran agreed in principle to hold bilateral negotiations to halt what Washington and its allies say is a plan by the Islamic Republic to develop nuclear weapons.

The debate will be divided into six segments: America's role in the world; the war in Afghanistan; Israel and Iran; the changing Middle East; terrorism; and China's rise.

pot roast, the ultimate comfort food, a family favorite.

There are two smells that will always remind me of my mama. The first is the smell of pine sol. Ask any of my cousins, I think we all think of the house I grew up in when we small that! The other is pot roast. For me it's the ultimate comfort food because there was nothing I loved more growing up than walking in the door and smelling that mom had put a roast in the oven. It's so funny because if you've never made a roast it seems a little intimidating but truly there isn't much that is easier to prepare! It was the third thing my mom taught us to make. The first was how to heat up campbell's soup, the second was kraft mac n cheese, and the third was pot roast. See! That's not so intimidating now is it? :) And what's fabulous is that it's a one pot meal so dinner is done and out of the way with only 1 pot to clean up after dinner! It's such a cozy thing to make in the winter! Discovering the flavor of adding fresh rosemary, red wine, and fresh thyme to the roast rocked my world and took this home cooked meal from ordinary to extraordinary!

For the roast you will need:

1 chuck roast. I truly never worry about the size. I've just always bought the one I can afford.
1 large bunch of carrots cut into large chunks
Your favorite type of potatoes cut into chunks (I used red this time)
1 large onion cut into large chunks
3-5 cloves of garlic depending on taste- just place in whole.
2/3- 3/4 cup red wine
2/3- 3/4 cup beef broth
1 fresh sprig of rosemary
2 fresh sprigs of thyme
freshly ground pepper and salt to taste

Place your roast into your roasting pan. (my mom just always used a 3x5 cake pan)
Salt and pepper your meat. Place the carrots, potatoes, onion, and garlic around your meat. Pour the wine and beef broth over the top. Place the rosemary and thyme on top of your meat. Cover with a lid or foil.

Cook at 325 degrees for 4 hours.

That's it! It doesn't get much easier than that!!

Enjoy!!

Roflumilast was associated with significant improvements in lung function in patients with moderate and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after 6 months of treatment compared with placebo. Roflumilast is approved to reduce the risk of exacerbations in patients with severe COPD associated with chronic bronchitis and a history of exacerbations. To examine the drug's impact on lung function, researchers from multiple institutions, including Baylor College of Medicine; Takeda Pharmaceuticals International GmbH; and Forest Research Institute, randomized 4,746 subjects to roflumilast (pooled intent-to-treat [ITT], n= 2511; moderate COPD, n=1184; severe COPD, n=1217) or placebo (pooled ITT, n=2235; moderate COPD, n=1098; severe COPD, n=1062). Baseline demographics were similar between treatment groups. At 6 months, roflumilast increased pre- and postbronchodilator FEV1 by 66 mL and 67 mL, respectively, compared with placebo. Roflumilast, compared with placebo, also increased pre- and postbronchodilator FEV1 in subjects with moderate and severe COPD. This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

IRA vs 401k ? Crucial Differences to Help You Plan Retirement

For some people, retirement years conjures up visions of enjoying the things you have always wanted: driving around the country in an RV, going to see the world and places you?ve always wanted to visit but have never had the time to visit. So, planning your retirement is crucial if you want to enjoy it.

So, the question actually is ?which retirement plan should you choose?? IRA, 401K or both? These two retirement plans while different are both advantageous. So, please take a careful look at both options before making your choice.

IRA Retirement Plan

IRAs can be either traditional or Roth. A traditional IRA retirement plan often requires you to fund the plan outside of your workplace. People within a certain income bracket stipulated by the government qualify for this.

The good thing about a traditional IRA is that your retirement funds are either fully or partially tax deductible depending on how much you earn. These taxes are deferred until you start taking out of your retirement funds. Once you do, it becomes your income and income taxes apply.

Roth IRAs on the other hand involve making initial investments with money that can be taxed. Investors are also unable to immediately access the funds anytime they need it. However, Roth IRAs are very popular because there is no tax on the account as it grows.

And when you retire, you can start withdrawing from it, without worrying about taxes as it is tax free. This option is best for those who think that their taxes are likely to go up when they retire and for people who want a wide variety of investment opportunities.

401K Retirement Plan

Unlike the IRA that can be accessed by people within a certain income bracket, 401ks can only be accessed by employer-sponsored contributions. In essence, it is a retirement plan that you can only partake in if you are employed by a company.

While you contribute and your account increases, your funds are tax free and without any duties. The tax is generally deferred until retirement when you start withdrawing the funds. Some employers often pledge to match their employees 401K contributions.

So, if you contribute $500 every month, your employer will also pay $500 into your 401k; making it a total of $1,000 contribution monthly. This is about the best 401K plan you have as you have a 100% ROI.

Should You Do Both?

Yes, you can. While you can choose either of the two plans, you may also want to consider combining the two plans. As long as you don?t go beyond the yearly maximum contributions and income requirements, you?ll be fine. To find out if you qualify to do both, check the IRS website for the latest requirements and information.

The guys and gals over at Mint.com tell us why we should have both a 401k and an IRA

  • You can ?tax diversify? by having both a 401(k) and a Roth IRA
  • Your current 401(k) doesn?t allow incoming rollovers, and you have an old 401(k) (or two, or three) to consolidate
  • You?ve maxed out your 401(k) and still have more money to save

PS:? You?ll notice that I have purposely excluded income guidelines and limits from this article.? This is because the numbers change yearly and it is best to check the IRS website on limits around contributions and tax brackets.

Bahrain detains 3 activists near tense village

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Authorities in Bahrain have detained the daughter of a jailed opposition leader and two other activists seeking to enter a village under a security clampdown following a bombing last week that killed a policeman.

Police took Zainab al-Khawaja and the two others into custody outside Eker, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the capital Manama, where authorities say a homemade explosive was detonated late Thursday. The policeman died the following day.

An Associated Press photographer witnessed the detentions Sunday.
