Great Books for Kids and Teens: It's Monday 11/26! What Are You ...

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.? We drove to Rochester, NY, (my hometown) for the long weekend, stayed with my dad and his wife, and enjoyed lots of visits with family and friends.? It was a very nice weekend, and it was great to see everyone!? Now we are back home, with lots to do!

So, we didn't have a lot of time for reading last week.? Unfortunately, I can't read a book in the car (I get sick), but I can manage flipping through magazines, so I caught up on months' worth of magazines that had piled up!? Besides those, here is what we all read last week:

  • I am STILL working my way through Middlemarch by George Eliot.? It is a hefty one, and I am feeling ready to move onto something else....but I am still enjoying it and want to see what happens - 200 pages to go!
  • My husband, Ken, is reading Michael Connelly's The Fifth Witness (a Lincoln Lawyer novel) and enjoying it.
  • Jamie, 18, can read in the car (lucky!), so he finished City of Ashes (#2), read City of Glass (#3), and has started City of Fallen Angels (#4), in his quest to re-read Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series for the third time, in preparation for book #5 which was recently released.
Believe it or not, I did manage to post two book reviews before we left last Wednesday: Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian, a spooky, suspenseful novel, and The Freedom Maze by Delia Sherman, a middle-grade/teen audio book.? I enjoyed both novels very much.

What are you and your family reading this week?

(What are you reading Monday is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, with a kid/teen version hosted by Teach Mentor Texts.)

(AP) ? Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak abruptly quit politics Monday, potentially robbing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a key ally who enabled his hard-line government to present a moderate face to the world.

Netanyahu's party picked a young, more hawkish list of candidates in its primary election on Monday.

Barring another comeback by the mercurial former general, Barak's departure marked an end to a distinguished and tumultuous career that spanned half a century. It began on a communal farm, led to military greatness and business success and a mixed record in politics that was highlighted by failed peacemaking efforts during a brief term as prime minister.

Despite polls showing his small centrist Independence Party gaining momentum following the eight-day Israeli offensive in Gaza that he steered, Barak said he would not run again for office in the Jan. 22 elections.

"I feel I have exhausted my political activity, which had never been a special object of desire for me," Barak, 70, said in a surprise announcement in Tel Aviv. "There are many ways for me to serve the country and society, not just through politics."

Barak will remain as defense minister until a new government is sworn in after the elections.

Still, analysts predicted that Israel's most prominent warrior-statesman of his generation had yet to say the last word and was perhaps still angling to keep his job after the election as a special appointment of Netanyahu, who is expected to be re-elected. In recent polls, Barak's party had been struggling to nudge above the electoral threshold needed to get into parliament.

"In his position, he did the smartest thing one could do," said Shlomo Avineri, a political science professor at Jerusalem's Hebrew University. "He's not as popular as an electoral candidate as he is a minister of defense. He's not going to say no if he's asked to be the next minister of defense. And he probably will."

Over the past four years, Barak gave Netanyahu's governing coalition a well-known face to deal with the international community and Netanyahu himself a loyal and seasoned partner.

The two men have been close since the 1970s, when Barak was Netanyahu's commander in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit. As prime minister, Netanyahu awarded Barak great influence in decision-making and made him his informal point man to the United States.

The Obama administration embraced him as a moderating influence on Netanyahu's hardline policies toward the Arab world and Iran's nuclear program. Barak was scheduled to depart Tuesday for meetings with U.S. officials in Washington.

His departure from politics comes at an uncertain time for Israel, with Islamist political parties rising around the Jewish state and a decision looming on whether to strike Iran's nuclear program.

The Netanyahu-Barak alliance had its strains over this issue - with the prime minister reportedly objecting to Barak's newly moderate position that Israel should defer to the U.S. in deciding whether to attack Iran should sanctions fail to deter Tehran from attaining a nuclear bomb.

In its primary election Monday, Netanyahu's Likud Party elected hard-line politicians to lead its list of candidates for the Jan. 22 election. Unofficial results, confirmed after midnight by Likud officials, showed veteran moderates pushed off the list, while younger hawks made gains.

With opinion polls forecasting an even more hawkish government taking power after the January election, Netanyahu may face increasing heat from President Barack Obama in his second term without the moderating effect of Barak.

Netanyahu's hawkish vice premier, Moshe Yaalon, is expected to become defense minister if Barak remains on the sidelines.

In a statement, Netanyahu did not reveal his hand, saying only he "respects" Barak's decision to retire and thanking him for "his contribution ? over many years ? to the security of the state."

A protege of the assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, another former chief of staff, Barak was groomed for greatness. Born Ehud Brog, the eldest of four sons to Eastern European immigrants, he changed his name in the military to Barak (Hebrew for lightning).

He became Israel's most-decorated soldier ever, collecting medals and citations at a historic pace for his heroics on the battlefield and for leading daring commando raids.

As commander of Sayeret Matkal, Barak led the 1972 raid on a hijacked Sabena airliner on the ground in Israel with the commandos disguised as airline technicians. A photograph of Barak standing on the wing in white overalls as the freed hostages were disembarking has become part of Israeli lore. The following year, he led a commando operation in Beirut, sneaking into the city disguised as a woman.

Renowned as a brilliant military strategist, he rocketed through the ranks to become military chief of staff. In 1995, after 36 years in uniform, he made the quick transition to politics.

In less than four years, Barak was elected to parliament, held two top Cabinet posts, took charge of Israel's iconic Labor Party and was elected prime minister - beating Netanyahu in 1999 - on a pledge to reach a long-awaited peace with Israel's enemies.

But his stormy term in office lasted less than two years - the shortest of any elected Israeli premier - and he left under a swell of discontent for his unilateral withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000, his failed negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria, and a violent Palestinian uprising that erupted under his watch.

Despite the dramatic collapse, Barak credited his wide-reaching offer at Camp David to withdraw from nearly all of the West Bank and Gaza with exposing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's essential rejection of peace - a view endorsed by U.S. President Bill Clinton. By offering far-reaching concessions that had never been considered before, such as dividing Jerusalem and evacuating large settlements blocs, Barak also prepared Israeli public opinion for the types of steps it would likely have to take for future peace.

In 2001, Barak was crushed by Ariel Sharon in a special election. On the night of his defeat, Barak retired in dramatic fashion. Over the next few years, he amassed a fortune on the lecture circuit and in the corporate world. He purchased a high-rise Tel Aviv apartment reportedly worth more than $10 million, part of a lavish lifestyle that angered his socialist supporters.

In 2007, he returned to politics, easily recapturing the leadership of the Labor Party and becoming defense minister in a bid to rehabilitate a military that performed below expectations in a war against Hezbollah guerrillas the previous year.

But he remained personally unpopular and his party, which had led Israel to independence and governed it for its first three decades, had lost its public appeal.

After leading Labor to an all-time low of 13 of 120 parliamentary seats in the 2009 election, Barak enraged his dovish base by joining Netanyahu's coalition government.

Israeli hardliners didn't like him any better, accusing him of undercutting the West Bank settlement movement by withholding construction approvals, clearing squatters from West Bank homes and encouraging Netanyahu to support a slowdown in settlement construction. That slowdown, initiated by the United States, has since expired.

Barak eventually broke away from Labor to form his new party, Independence, with a few junior allies. Without its founding father, the future of the party is now in question.

Avraham Diskin, a political analyst at Tel Aviv University, said given Barak's resume "it just isn't worth the effort and humiliation" of fighting for his political survival.

"If he wants to be the defense minister in the next government, it depends more on the relationship he and Bibi have than on whether he has a very tiny section in the Knesset (parliament) or not," he said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.

Former general Danny Yatom, a longtime Barak confidant, said he will be remembered most for his attempts at peace.

"Barak's legacy is steadfastly defending the security of the state of Israel alongside a deep understanding that the conflict between us and the Arabs cannot be solved by military means alone," he said. "He tried when he was prime minister, but he did not succeed."

AP PHOTOS: Scenes from Bangladesh factory fire

A fire engulfed a garment factory outside Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, trapping many workers and killing at least 112 people in the building without emergency exits.

Authorities said the fire started on the ground floor late Saturday and spread upward, cutting off staircases and preventing workers' escape. Some survivors were rescued from the eight-story building's roof.

Thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives gathered at the burned-out factory Sunday awaiting word on relatives who worked there.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Here are photos of the fire and its aftermath:

McCain Lightens His Critique of Rice

Though he still has many questions, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., lightened his critique of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on Sunday.

This week, officials from the intelligence community confirmed that they changed Rice?s talking points for her Sunday show appearances in the days after the terrorist attack in Libya that left four Americans dead.

McCain, who has said he would block her nomination if Rice is tapped as Secretary of State, said on Sunday that he would give Rice a chance to explain what happened.

?I?d be glad to have the opportunity to discuss these issues with her,? he said on Fox News Sunday, adding, ?I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position.?

Rice has been the subject of fierce attacks for weeks from McCain and Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., among others, for initially saying an anti-Islamic video was the cause of the attack, and failing to mention al-Qaida. Later, Obama administration officials said her talking points were changed to omit classified information for security purposes.

President Obama and several Democrats have defended Rice in recent weeks, saying the criticism has been unfair. This week, Rice made her first public comments on the controversy.

?I relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community," Rice said on Wednesday, according to NBC News. "I made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers.?

On Sunday, McCain backed off his critique, focusing more on the Obama administration and the failure to prevent the terrorist attack in the first place. ?The problem is the president of the United States,? he said.

Although McCain struck a more conciliatory tone on Sunday, Graham continued his attack on Rice and the administration, saying he did not believe the intelligence officials who said they changed her talking points.

?I?m increasingly convinced that the best and current intelligence assessment on 16 September went against the video.?The video was a political smokescreen,? Graham said on ABC?s This Week, adding, ?I don't believe the video is the reason for this.?I don't believe it was ever the reason for this.?That was a political story, not an intel story, and we're going to hold people accountable.?

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., dismissed Graham?s critique, saying Rice did her job and followed the instructions that were given to her by the intelligence community.

?If this were an NFL football game, the critics of Ambassador Rice would be penalized for piling on,? he said on ABC. ?For goodness' sake, she got the report from the intelligence community.?She dutifully reported it to the public, just exactly what we expect her to do.?

Although praising Rice on ?an effective job as U.N. ambassador, especially on issues such as North Korea,? Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., still remained critical of her actions following the attack in Libya.

?On this she is wrong,? King said on NBC?s Meet the Press. ?If she is sent out to speak to the American people on what happened in Benghazi, she is obligated to do more than look at three sentences of unclassified or five sentences of unclassified talking points? She knew that the story she was giving out was not entirely true.?

McCain, along with Graham and Ayotte, called for a special, select committee to investigate the attack, much like those that examined the Iran-Contra affair and the Watergate scandal, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would not allow the committee. Still, McCain stood firm on his position.

?Four committees in the House and four in the Senate and they are holding different hearings and turf fights going on as it usually does in these bodies,? McCain said. ?We need a select committee in order to sort it out.?

How to Calculate the Value of Your Social Media Followers - HubSpot

How to Calculate the Value of Your Social Media Followers [CALCULATOR]

.

voal snapshotintermediate

If you?re using social media for marketing and you?re not measuring your dollars-and-cents ROI, you?re doing it wrong. As my favorite rap quote says, ?If it don?t make dollars, it don?t make sense.?

Marketers wouldn?t dream of spending budget on banner or PPC ads without a measured and positive return on their investment; but for some reason, many of us still play dumb when it comes to the hard data about the performance of our social media marketing investments. And even if you?re not spending budget on Facebook or Twitter, remember: Time is money, and you?re probably spending a significant amount of time.

All too often, social media marketing advice comes from greasy, snake oil hucksters selling platitudes like ?engage in the conversation,? or worse, ?be awesome.? While advice like this is hard to disagree with, it?s not useful or concrete. Instead, we marketers should be measuring our social media marketing campaigns to determine what is making our businesses money -- and what isn?t. In other words, ignore the unicorns-and-rainbows superstitions.

How to Calculate the Value of Your Facebook & Twitter Followers

A while ago, in a HubSpot marketing team meeting, we were discussing how much we should be willing to invest to gain a new social media follower or Like, and I found myself at the whiteboard plotting out a formula. Over the course of the next few weeks -- with the help of several of my geeky colleagues -- I put together a formula to calculate a metric I call VOAL (Value Of A Like). Once you know your VOAL, you can plan your social media efforts with confidence they?ll generate a positive ROI.

Below is the formula and how it breaks down ...

L (Total Likes)

The total number of audience members connected to your social media?account. On Facebook, these are Likes of your page, and on Twitter, these are followers.

UpM (Unlikes-per-Month)

The average number of fans who ?unlike? your social network?account each month. On Facebook, this is an ?unlike,? and on Twitter, this is an ?unfollow.?

LpD (Links-per-Day)

The average number of times you?re posting links, and potentially?converting links driven from your social media account. On Facebook, this is the number of?posts you?re making, per day, that lead to a page on your website. On Twitter, this is the?number of times, per day, you?re tweeting these kinds of links.

C (Average Clicks)

The average number of clicks on the links to your site you?re posting on?your social media accounts.

CR (Conversion Rate)

The average conversion rate of your website, from visit to sale or?visit to lead. This can be an overall average, but for increased accuracy, use the conversion?rate measured from traffic coming from the social network you?re calculating.

ACV (Average Conversion Value)

The average value of each ?conversion.? In this context,?a ?conversion? is the action you?ve used to measure CR for. It could be average sale price?or average lead value. For increased accuracy, use the average conversion value of traffic?coming from the specific social network.

The ValueOfALike.com Calculator

In my efforts to make sure all social media marketers can apply this formula, I built a free, easy-to-use little calculator at ValueOfALike.com. Answer six simple questions about your business' use of Facebook or Twitter and it will tell you exactly -- in concrete dollars and cents -- what each Like or follower is worth to your company. To calculate your value of a Facebook Like, you can easily answer these questions using your Facebook Insights and your closed-loop marketing analytics (in the calculator, click the question mark next to each question for an explanation about how to acquire each data point). For Twitter, you can use tools like Twitter's advertising analytics platform, closed-loop marketing analytics, as well as educated estimates to determine your Twitter numbers. Furthermore, each question input in the calculator is shown on a slider, so you can easily adjust the values up or down to see how changing various metrics will impact your bottom line.

You can answer the questions for either your Twitter or Facebook marketing efforts, and you can enter information based on lead generation or actual sales data. The calculator is flexible, and it's designed to help you put the VOAL formula to work for your brand in the way that makes the most sense for you.

VOAL Formula in Action: 3 Real-Life Examples

To demonstrate what the VOAL calculation would look like using realistic numbers, let?s start with an example from Facebook. HubSpot partner Kuno Creative's Facebook Page has 3,103 total Likes, 30 unlikes per month, posts 1.3 posts per day, with each post getting an average of 190 clicks. Their visit-to-lead conversion rate for Facebook traffic is around 2%, and they report an average conversion value of $350 per lead. Because of their very high clickthrough rate of 6.12% and their huge $350 lead value, they have a VOAL of $1,729.

On the other hand, if we look at some numbers from a different company -- Lynton Web, another HubSpot partner -- we see a different picture. They have a smaller Facebook presence with 174 total Likes, about 1 unlike per month, post 1.5 posts per day, get a single click on each link on average, and they told me their visit-to-lead conversion rate is around .8%. If we assume they have a $100 value per lead generated, they have a VOAL of $0.013.

To demonstrate how we can apply the same VOAL math to Twitter, let?s use HubSpot?s Twitter metrics as an example. Here, I?ll be estimating the numbers. We have 258,522 followers and about 2,000 unfollows per month (as reported by Twitter?s advertising analytics platform). We post around once per hour -- so 24 posts per day -- and each tweet generates around 120 clicks. We have a visit-to-lead conversion rate of 55%, and let?s assume a value per lead of $40. This gives us a VOAL for Twitter of $0.32.

Applying VOAL to Your Social Media Marketing Efforts?

Once you understand the true, monetary value of each of your business' social media connections, you can start to understand exactly how much time and money is worth spending to grow your social media reach,?and you'll know which metrics you need to improve to get the most out of your efforts.

Play around with the calculator's sliders for each question to understand how each variable impacts your overall VOAL. How much does your VOAL change if you were to increase your posting frequency? What about boosting overall Likes? Should you focus your efforts on growing your social media reach? Remember, when it comes to social media marketing, ?If it don?t make dollars, it don?t make sense.?

Check out the free calculator at ValueOfALike.com. What's your business' VOAL? What can you do to increase this value?

Child With Cancer, 7, Given Medical Marijuana ? Dad Fighting ...

Child Cancer Medial Marijuana

Mykayla Comstock, 7, was prescribed medical marijuana to help with the side effects of chemotherapy, but her father disagrees and is taking legal action. Keep reading to find out more details!

Ten days after 7-year-old Mykayla Comstock was diagnosed with T-cell leukemia, an aggressive form of the disease that affects 10 to 15 percent of patients, her mother, Erin Purchase, began giving her?medical marijuana.

?As soon as they told me she had leukemia, I knew that I would be going to get her medical marijuana card,? Erin, 25, told The Oregonian. ?That was just a no-brainer for me completely.?

But her father, Jesse Comstock, strongly disagrees with his ex-wife?s decision, and contacted child welfare officials, police and Mykayla?s oncologist to have the prescription removed.

?She was stoned out of her mind,? the 26-year-old father said of his visit with Mykayla in August. ?All she wanted to do was lay on the bed and play video games.?

Though medical marijuana is often used to combat the side effects of chemotherapy, which often include nausea, pain and anxiety, it is rarely prescribed to children. Mykayla is one of 52 children with legal permission to obtain marijuana in the state of Oregon.

?We use it for nausea, for pain, to reduce anxiety,? Erin explained. ?We use it to fight cancer itself.?

And little Mykayla, who likes to call herself ?Brave Mykayla,? agrees. ?Without the cannabis, I feel more tired, and with the cannabis I have more energy to, like, play and stuff,? she said. ?It makes me feel funny, happy.?

Instead of smoking joints, Mykayla swallows a capsule form of the drug two times a day. Sometimes, she snacks on a gingersnap or brownie baked with marijuana-laced butter. ?It helps me eat and sleep,? she said while nestling close to her mother. ?The chemotherapy makes you feel like you want to stay up all night long.?

And according to her mom, the pot is helping. ?She?s like she was before,? Erin added. ?She?s a normal kid.?

Despite her improved attitude, Jesse worries that his daughter will become addicted with continued use of the drug. ?She?s not terminally ill,? he said. ?She is going to get over this, and with all this pot, they are going to hinder her brain growth. It?s going to limit her options in life because of the decisions her mother has made for her.?

Despite her young age, Mykayla has already developed a strong opinion concerning her pain-relieving medication. ?They should make it not illegal,? she declared, ?everyone should use it.?

Watch the video of ?Brave Mykayla? below!

Video: Prince Charles ?impatient? about life goals

>>> the british tabloids are reading a lot into some recent comments from him. keir, good morning to you.

>> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. you know, prince charles is now in his mid-60s, a time when many people's thoughts turn to what they want to do next. what he was saying in these comments is he wants to finish restoring one of his stately homes , but some think it is a reference by the future king to when he might get to move into this home. prince charles has seen his eldest son married and watched his mother celebrate 60 years on the throne. yet still he waits for the day when he will be king.

>> reporter: in british history no heir apparent has had to wait so long. now at 64, in an outburst of frustration, he has betrayed a hint of mortality.

>> impatient, me? what a thing to suggest. yes, of course, i am. i'll run out of time, soon.

>> reporter: i'll have snuffed it if i'm not careful.

>> reporter: even though he was officially talking about work to restore a stately home , humphries house. charles is famously one of the hardest working royals, running charities and speaking out on issues he cares about, like global warming .

>> if we do not create a big shift in our thinking and approach, humanity and the earth will soon begin to suffer some very grim consequences.

>> reporter: but he worries that the clock is ticking for him, too. his mood made worse perhaps by a recent poll that found prince charles less popular even than his new daughter-in-law. the same survey discovering the british like charles a lot less than the queen and even his son who is also waiting to be king.

>> perhaps camilla and charles are in the sandwich generation of royals. okay, they are respected but between the queen and william and kate don't get much of a lookp doesn't matter what the public thinks. charles will be king one day.

>> reporter: charles represents his mom. on a tour of australia last month, a successful trip, the crowd not as excited for william and kate. later in new zealand he spent his birthday on the set of the new movie "the hobbit. ".

>> the on this special day, your birthday, i offer myself at the request of sir peter jackson for you to come on as you see fit.

>> reporter: one day prince charles will be in command of an entire nation. but he may still be a few birthdays short of becoming king. royal experts say the queen will never give up the throne, not before she dies. she sees it at her duty. and, of course, savannah, the queen is still a young 86. her mother, the queen mother, lived to 100 which by my math prince charles may have to wait until he's 79.

>> what do they say, long live the king?

>> or in the words of the hobbit --

>> being a royal might stink sometimes. you can't talk about the hard life you've got going there.

UConn Upsets Louisville 23-20 In Triple Overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? Blidi Wreh-Wilson knew the ball would eventually come his way. The Connecticut cornerback just wanted to make sure he was in the right position to make a play.

Wilson's first interception of the season came in the third overtime Saturday and helped the Huskies upset No. 19 Louisville 23-20.

On third and goal from Connecticut's 5, Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater looked for DeVante Parker in the end zone. But his pass was slightly behind his receiver and Wreh-Wilson, one of the top cornerbacks in the country, read it perfectly to make the pickoff.

Four plays later Chad Christen kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the Huskies (5-6, 2-4 Big East Conference) their second straight win and maintain their bowl hopes.

"I just know in the red zone they like to go back-shoulder on the fade ball and I had the guy across from me," Wreh-Wilson said. "On the play before, they ran a similar route and I played it the same way.

"This time, the ball came to me. I flattened him out and didn't let him go upfield. I pushed him toward the sideline."

Connecticut's victory denied Louisville (9-2, 4-2) a chance to tie first-place Rutgers (9-2, 5-1). The No. 21 Scarlet Knights lost 27-6 to Pittsburgh. The Cardinals will play at Rutgers Thursday night and the winner will earn the Big East's BCS bid.

"It's tough when you lose one like that, the way we battled back to get the game into overtime," Cardinals coach Charlie Strong said.

The Huskies' defense made a 10-0 lead stand for more than three quarters before the Cardinals regrouped in the fourth behind Bridgewater. Although Louisville outgained Connecticut 401-241, the Huskies made the stand they needed at the right time.

"We were just looking for a few points in the second half and weren't able to come up with points in the third and fourth quarters," Connecticut coach Paul Pasqualoni said. "I thought our guys hung in there on pride and with character and how hard they fought in this game.

"We just have to play the overtime. As a coach you just figure out how you can get in position to try and win the game and give the kids a chance to score some points and stop them on defense. We were fortunate here today and we came out ahead in a tough game."

Others played big roles in the Huskies' win.

Johnny McEntee relieved an injured Chandler Whitmer in the fourth quarter and threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Shakim Phillips in the second OT. Lyle McCombs rushed for 133 yards on 29 carries and Nick Williams scored on a 3-yard run to put the Huskies up 10-0.

Christen gave Connecticut its first lead with a 39-yard field goal in the first quarter.

It was nearly a storybook comeback for Bridgewater, who sustained a broken left wrist on a second-quarter sack by Sio Moore and sat out most of the third quarter. The sophomore returned to lead Louisville's fourth-quarter rally and force overtime with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Parker with 21 seconds remaining in regulation.

Bridgewater finished 30 of 53 passing for 331 yards and two touchdowns. But he was sacked four times along with the game-changing interception.

Louisville, which lost leading rusher Senorise Perry two weeks ago with a torn ACL, gained 27 yards rushing.

"The way we were blocking, no running back could have been a difference-maker," Strong said.

For Connecticut, that was nothing new. The Huskies entered the game with the nation's ninth-ranked defense and was No. 11 against the run at 108 yards allowed per game.

And they applied those strengths early and often against the Cardinals, who had the conference's top scoring offense.

Louisville was outgained 160-88 in the first half while being shut out for the first time since Pittsburgh did it here a year ago. Bridgewater's timing and mechanics looked particularly off with passes either underthrown or overthrown.

His receivers didn't help him by dropping passes, either. One flub by a wide-open Parker on the second drive brought an angry Strong on the field to yell at his players.

"We hurt ourselves a lot," senior center Mario Benavides said. "Typical game when things aren't going your way, you stop yourself."

And while Connecticut's offense wasn't great, the Huskies took advantage of their few opportunities.

After two three-and-out drives, Connecticut moved 51 yards in eight plays to set up Christen's 39-yard field goal. Two drives later it was 10-0 as the Huskies drove 66 yards in 10 plays ending in Williams' 3-yard touchdown run.

The lead stood until Bridgewater's return inspired the Cardinals and the crowd of 45,618 late in the third quarter. After John Wallace's 19-yard field goal early in the fourth, Bridgewater directed a 92-yard, 13-play drive kept alive by a 28-yard pass to Eli Rogers and a 9-yarder to Wright for first down at the Huskies' 26.

A 14-yard pass to Wright and a face mask foul penalty on Connecticut set up first-and-goal at the 6, and Bridgewater found a wide-open Parker in the end zone.
