(AP) ? Many people who have tried Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system without a touch screen have hated it because of the inability to use touch and swipe commands to get things going. Now, a company has made a digital pen to allow people to use Windows 8 on their old monitors for less than the cost of buying a new touch-enabled computer.

The device was unveiled this week at the International CES, an annual showcase in Las Vegas for the latest smartphones, tablet computers and other consumer-electronic devices.

WHAT IT IS: E Fun, a West Covina, Calif.-based company, has come out with the Apen Touch8, a cordless pen that works in tandem with an attachment that plugs into the Windows computer's USB port.

HOW IT WORKS: The attachment, which is really an infrared and ultrasonic receiver, clips magnetically to the side of the screen, which can be as large as 17 inches diagonally. The pen emits an infrared beam out of its tip. The receiver attachment sends the pen's signals to the computer, which interprets its precise location.

Pushing down on the pen results in a separate ultrasonic signal, which is equivalent to a touch screen sensing when you are touching it. Just like that, you can swipe and tap your way through Windows 8. The pen runs on a watch battery, which should last about 500 hours and is replaceable.

WHY IT'S HOT: Windows 8, Microsoft Corp.'s effort to make desktop and laptop computers work more like tablet computers, was released in October to mixed reviews. A major problem is the fact that many of the features require a touch-screen monitor to work, making the experience unpleasant for those with older machines. Apen Touch8 offers a way for those with older computers to experience the newer touch-based functions.

AVAILABILITY: The pen is to go on sale in North America by the end of March for $80.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The gig is almost up for one of the eight Monopoly tokens. But which will it be? Iron? Thimble? Top Hat?

Or another of their board game buddies?

Hasbro is holding a Facebook contest to eliminate one of the eight tokens that identify the players and introduce a new one. Possible new tokens include a cat, diamond ring, guitar, toy robot and helicopter

It's the latest effort by the toymaker to jazz up the game which debuted almost eight decades ago.

In recent years, Hasbro Inc. introduced a version that replaces paper money with an electronic bank and another that incorporates an iPad. There is an app-only version of the game for smartphones and tablets.

Monopoly's tokens have actually changed quite a lot over the years. The original version also included a lantern, purse, cannon and a rocking horse. A horse and rider token was used in the 1950s. During World War II, metal tokens were replaced by wooden ones.

But this time, users have a say.

So if you are tired of the iron token and would rather be represented by a robot, here's your chance to make those wishes known. Beginning Tuesday, Facebook fans of monopoly can vote on which piece to eliminate and which one to add. The voting ends Feb. 5.

Up for elimination: all eight current tokens including a battleship, iron, racecar, Scottie dog, shoe, thimble, top hat and wheelbarrow. Most tokens were introduced with the first Parker Brothers iteration of the game in 1935, and the Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Eric Nyman, global brand leader for Hasbro gaming, said the impetus for the contest came from chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has over 10 million fans.

"We're constantly interacting with those fans and we're always getting suggestions from fans about what tokens they would love to see," Nyman said. They took five of the top suggestions from Facebook for the contest.

A special $17.99 limited edition of the game called Golden Ticket will be available in Target stores beginning Feb. 15 with golden versions of both the old and new tokens. It will be the last time all of the classic tokens will be available with the game.

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.

Monopoly's iconic tokens originated when game creator Charles Darrow's niece suggested using charms from a charm bracelet for tokens.

Shares in Hasbro, which is based in Pawtucket, R.I., ended Wednesday up 30 cents at $35.68.

Detecting dusty clouds and stars: New radio wave technique uncovers shadows of clouds and stars in Milky Way's center

Jan. 7, 2013 ? The center of our Milky Way galaxy is a wondrous place full of huge star clusters, dust clouds, magnetic filaments and a supermassive black hole. But it can be a confusing place, too, posing challenges to astronomers trying to image these exotic features and learn more about where they are located in the galaxy.

Northwestern University's Farhad Zadeh has discovered a new tool for detecting dusty clouds and stars: simply take a picture using radio waves. He is the first to identify what he calls radio dark clouds and stars. Stars in the early and late phases of their evolution are shrouded by huge dusty envelopes in the form of dust and gas outflows.

"When you see these dark stars or clouds in radio wavelength images, it tells you something very interesting," Zadeh said. "We immediately know there is a cold gas cloud or dusty star mixing with a hot radiative medium and that an interaction is taking place. Knowing details of these clouds is important because the clouds can produce stars and also provide material for the growth of black holes."

Zadeh is a professor of physics and astronomy in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a member of Northwestern's Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA).

Unlike in the optical, X-ray and infrared wavelengths, it is unusual to see a dark feature with radio waves. Radio is a long wavelength and therefore doesn't get absorbed easily and typically passes through whatever is in its way.

Initially Zadeh thought maybe the dark features he saw on the radio images he was studying were nothing, but then he connected the features to five known dense molecular and dusty clouds located in the center of our galaxy, some near Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the black hole.

"This technique provides very good sensitivity of faint dusty features, and it can produce images with even higher resolution than many other telescopes," Zadeh said. "It is an initial observation that tells you something is there that needs to be studied more closely."

In addition, astronomers can measure the size of dusty stars using this new technique.

Zadeh will present his results at 11:30 a.m. PST (Pacific Standard Time) Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the 221st meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, Calif. He also will participate in a press conference on the galactic center at 12:45 p.m. PST the same day.

The interaction of a cold dust cloud with a hot radiation field results in a loss in the continuum emission and appears as a dark feature in the radio wavelength image, Zadeh said. The dark features that trace the embedded molecular clouds provide astronomers with the size of the cloud in three dimensions.

Although not part of the work he is presenting, Zadeh said a good example of a dusty cloud that could be imaged with his technique is G2, the tiny cloud that is fast approaching Sgr A*, our galaxy's black hole.

The cloud now is too close to the black hole for Zadeh to take an image, but he is looking at earlier data to see if he can locate G2 as a radio dark cloud.

"If the cloud was farther away from the black hole than it is now, we could detect it," Zadeh said.

For his study, Zadeh used Green Bank Telescope maps and Very Large Array images from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The National Science Foundation (grant AST-0807400) supported the research.

The title of Zadeh's paper, which was published Nov. 1 by the Astrophysical Journal Letters, is "Imprints of Molecular Clouds in Radio Continuum Images."

Silver and gold end recent correction and way now open to very ...

Posted on 07 January 2013 with no comments from readers

Last Friday likely marked the end of the recent correction in silver and gold prices and there is nothing except blue sky from here. That was the conclusion of chartists like Clive Maund reading the technical signals (click here) from the price charts over the weekend.

From a more fundamental perspective last week was something of a bear raid on precious metals by the Fed and its bullion banking friends. False rumours about a wind-up of the QE program quickly put the wind up the weaker holders of gold.

Manipulation, manipulation

The buyers were doubtless these same banks. This is actually what the great gold guru himself Jim Sinclair said would happen a month ago (click here). The bullion banks are repositioning their holdings ready for another leap in gold and silver prices, this time up and not down.

In a manipulated market this sort of thing happens all the time. However, the longer trend is still everyman?s friend.

Mr. Maund?s commentary correctly points out that abandoning QE would be like the captain of the Titantic spotting an iceberg and ordering the ship to sail straight into it. As ArabianMoney noted yesterday the global bond markets would immediately crash without QE.

Investing on the inevitable is generally a highly successful move. However, patience and perseverance are always needed to ride out the ups and downs of any financial market. Many fellow travellers drop out along the way. A few left last week and will bitterly regret it later.

$11,000 gold?

Eventually gold and silver will arrive at their ultimate destination of very much higher prices. James Turk hazards $11,000 an ounce as the top for gold (click here). Silver has its $1,000 an ounce pundits. Markets do always tend to overshoot on the upside.

So New Year nerves aside what Friday last week really represented was probably the cheapest buying opportunity of this year. Put the technical charts and fundamentals together and the message is crystal clear. Gold and silver prices are about to take-off.

Gold and silver stocks most likely also hit rock bottom at the same time last week. The gains from here should be pretty spectacular.

The new speed football helmets are fantastic for the player and the ...

National football league as well as College headwear are usually in the entire process of changes, not only in their looks but also in their performance. The main suppliers regarding football headwear are usually Riddell in addition to Schutt Sports. Inside the NFL any participant can easily wear any kind of helmet company, but only the naming of Riddell can be displayed on the actual helmet. Often this brand is shown on the front side of the headgear as well as on the back bumper. When the helmet isn?t a Riddell helmet, you?ll usually notice this region bare or perhaps the team identify displayed.
You might be aware, the looks of the actual headgear has improved. The original round headgear will soon become a thing regarding the past. Today there?s a brand-new helmet referred to as the speed helmet. These new speed helmets look modern, with brand new groves as well as openings for venting. As of (blank) right now, Riddell won?t be able to issue the original helmet to the players on the field. As a substitute they have to provide a speed helmet or another type known as the revolution helmet. On the other hand, if a player is already using an established helmet they can continue to keep using that specific helmet right up until a new one is necessary. That athlete is definitely grandfathered into that special classic design.
Exactly what will this indicate for the future of the NFL helmets for people who compile NFL helmets? As of now, virtually all NFL current mini helmets remain obtainable in the original VSR4 design and style and well as being available in the completely new speed design. The latest speed helmets generate a brand new section of sports memorabilia to collect. This really is great for the sports collectibles sector. With this latest slow overall economy this offers brand-new gross sales for the sports memorabilia shops. Furthermore, the helmets are quite attractive. The throwback NFL mini helmets will only be for sale in the regular model.
For university mini helmets, all organizations will likely be obtainable through Riddell in the new mini speed helmet style and design. Also, for the major twenty selling organizations will likely stay offered in the standard VSR4 style. The universities are vigorously offering and employing the speed headgear. They look great and several schools are employing many different designs on their own helmets. This change delivers some new fashion to a sports activity that has been around for quite a while.
In the game the new speed helmets are viewed as safer for the football participant. These kind of helmets are built to absorb greater impact and do less injury to the brain. This is basically the primary reason for the alteration from the traditional headgear to the innovative speed helmet design. However, for the sports memorabilia business this change will most beneficial to added sales within the sports memorabilia market. When any collector would like the speed mini helmet, a reproduction full-sized speed helmet or an genuine speed helmet, the same as the ones utilized on the football field, they can get it. The NFL helmets and the university helmets are now more safe and good looking all at once.

The Next Steve Jobs of Wellness and Fitness Is Pushing A Mop ...

I was headed home from a short trip the other day, and decided to pull over at a gym I happened to spot. It was a good time to sneak in a workout. While I was changing clothes there was a young man in the locker room mopping the floor. I asked him how he liked the gym. A simple enough question. He leaned on that mop, screwed his face a couple of different ways, pointed at me and took off. . .

  • ?I tried to get in this place and workout when I was 17. But they wouldn?t let me in until I was 18. I am 19 now. I knew more about working out and health than anybody working here, and I couldn?t get in the door. Now can you even believe that?
  • ?So now I work here, but they?re doing this fitness stuff all wrong, everywhere. I am going to change all that. I am saving up my money and I am going to open my own place. Hell, I?ll be a millionaire by the time I am 30, but that isn?t why I am saving up. I just know my place will be popular.
  • ?You can?t just have weights and machines. You?ve got to get in the spiritual, mental, and nutritional stuff too. I know exactly how I am going to do that. I can see it clear as day.
  • ?I?ve got to go now. Have a nice day. Bye!?

You know what? I saw my Dad at the same age, in that guy. My Dad wasn?t a person. He was a tornado? an entrepreneur to the bone? a bull in a china shop. That young man is about to turn a lot of peoples? worlds upside down, and upset the balance of the universe.

Na?ve? Sure. But we don?t take on impossible tasks if we think they?re impossible. That young guy is going to shoot for the moon and probably hit oil in the process.

There was one key trait in him that was the tell of great things to come. He was disgusted, downright mad, at the way the fitness industry is operating. In his eyes there?s a huge, gaping hole in the marketplace. And he?s about to drive a train through it. I have no doubt he will be successful.

Sometimes, Grasshopper, the best seeds of an idea are born of frustration. I?ve got to go now. Bye!
