Marijuana's long, strange trip in the US

By Gene Johnson, The Associated Press

The grass is no greener. But, finally, it's legal ? at least somewhere in America. It's been a long, strange trip for marijuana.?

Washington state and Colorado voted to legalize and regulate its recreational use last month. But before that, the plant, renowned since ancient times for its strong fibers, medical use and mind-altering properties, was a staple crop of the colonies, an "assassin of youth," a counterculture emblem and a widely accepted ? if often abused ? medicine.?

On the occasion of Thursday's "Legalization Day," when Washington's new law takes effect, here's a look back at the cultural and legal status of the "evil weed" in American history.?

Cannabis in the colonies?
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp and puzzled over the best ways to process it for clothing and rope. Indeed, cannabis has been grown in America since soon after the British arrived. In 1619 the Crown ordered the colonists at Jamestown to grow hemp to satisfy England's incessant demand for maritime ropes, Wayne State University professor Ernest Abel wrote in "Marihuana: The First Twelve Thousand Years."?

Hemp became more important to the colonies as New England's own shipping industry developed, and homespun hemp helped clothe American soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Some colonies offered farmers "bounties" for growing it.?

"We have manufactured within our families the most necessary articles of cloathing," Jefferson said in "Notes on the State of Virginia." "Those of wool, flax and hemp are very coarse, unsightly, and unpleasant."?

Jefferson went on to invent a device for processing hemp in 1815.?
?
Taste the hashish
Books such as "The Arabian Nights" and Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo," with its voluptuous descriptions of hashish highs in the exotic Orient, helped spark a cannabis fad among intellectuals in the mid-19th century.?

"But what changes occur!" one of Dumas' characters tells an uninitiated acquaintance. "When you return to this mundane sphere from your visionary world, you would seem to leave a Neapolitan spring for a Lapland winter -- to quit paradise for earth -- heaven for hell! Taste the hashish, guest of mine -- taste the hashish."?

Midnight party: Pot, gay marriage become legal in Washington state?
PhotoBlog: Pot smokers gather under Seattle's Space Needle

After the Civil War, with hospitals often overprescribing opiates for pain, many soldiers returned home hooked on harder drugs.

Those addictions eventually became a public health concern. In 1906, Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act, requiring labeling of ingredients, and states began regulating opiates and other medicines ? including cannabis.?
?
Mexican folklore and jazz clubs
By the turn of the 20th century, cannabis smoking remained little known in the United States ? but that was changing, thanks largely to The Associated Press, says Isaac Campos, a Latin American history professor at the University of Cincinnati.?

In the 1890s, the first English-language newspaper opened in Mexico and, through the wire service, tales of marijuana-induced violence that were common in Mexican papers began to appear north of the border ? helping to shape public perceptions that would later form the basis of pot prohibition, Campos says.?

By 1910, when the Mexican Revolution pushed immigrants north, articles in the New York Sun, Boston Daily Globe and other papers decried the "evils of ganjah smoking" and suggested that some use it "to key themselves up to the point of killing."?

Pot-smoking spread through the 1920s and became especially popular with jazz musicians. Louis Armstrong, a lifelong fan and defender of the drug he called "gage," was arrested in California in 1930 and given a six-month suspended sentence for pot possession.?

"It relaxes you, makes you forget all the bad things that happen to a Negro," he once said. In the 1950s, he urged legalization in a letter to President Dwight Eisenhower.?
?
Reefer madness, hemp for victory
After the repeal of alcohol prohibition in 1933, Harry Anslinger, who headed the federal Bureau of Narcotics, turned his attention to pot. He told of sensational crimes reportedly committed by marijuana addicts. "No one knows, when he places a marijuana cigarette to his lips, whether he will become a philosopher, a joyous reveler in a musical heaven, a mad insensate, a calm philosopher, or a murderer," he wrote in a 1937 magazine article called "Marijuana: Assassin of Youth."?

The hysteria was captured in the propaganda films of the time ? most famously, "Reefer Madness," which depicted young adults descending into violence and insanity after smoking marijuana. The movie found little audience upon its release in 1936 but was rediscovered by pot fans in the 1970s.?

Congress banned marijuana with the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. Anslinger continued his campaign into the '40s and '50s, sometimes trying ? without luck ? to get jazz musicians to inform on each other. "Zoot suited hep cats, with their jive lingo and passion for swift, hot music, provide a fertile field for growth of the marijuana habit, narcotics agents have found here," began a 1943 Washington Post story about increasing pot use in the nation's capital.?

The Department of Agriculture promoted a different message. After Japanese troops cut off access to Asian fiber supplies during World War II, it released "Hemp For Victory," a propaganda film urging farmers to grow hemp and extolling its use in parachutes and rope for the war effort.?

Counterculture
As the conformity of the postwar era took hold, getting high on marijuana and other drugs emerged as a symbol of the counterculture, with Jack Kerouac and the rest of the Beat Generation singing pot's praises. It also continued to be popular with actors and musicians. When actor Robert Mitchum was arrested on a marijuana charge in 1948, People magazine recounted, "The press nationwide branded him a dope fiend. Preachers railed against him from pulpits. Mothers warned their daughters to shun his films."?

Congress responded to increasing drug use ? especially heroin ? with stiffer penalties in the '50s. Anslinger began to hype what we now call the "gateway drug" theory: that marijuana had to be controlled because it would eventually lead its users to heroin.?

Then came Vietnam. The widespread, open use of marijuana by hippies and war protesters from San Francisco to Woodstock finally exposed the falsity of the claims so many had made about marijuana leading to violence, says University of Virginia professor Richard Bonnie, a scholar of pot's cultural status.?

In 1972, Bonnie was the associate director of a commission appointed by President Richard Nixon to study marijuana. The commission said marijuana should be decriminalized and regulated. Nixon rejected that, but a dozen states in the '70s went on to eliminate jail time as a punishment for pot arrests.?

'Just say no'
The push to liberalize drug laws hit a wall by the late 1970s. Parents groups became concerned about data showing that more children were using drugs, and at a younger age. The religious right was emerging as a force in national politics. And the first "Cheech and Chong" movie, in 1978, didn't do much to burnish pot's image.?

When she became first lady, Nancy Reagan quickly promoted the anti-drug cause. During a visit with schoolchildren in Oakland, Calif., as Reagan later recalled, "A little girl raised her hand and said, 'Mrs. Reagan, what do you do if somebody offers you drugs?' And I said, 'Well, you just say no.' And there it was born."?

By 1988, more than 12,000 "Just Say No" clubs and school programs had been formed, according to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library. Between 1978 and 1987, the percentage of high school seniors reporting daily use of marijuana fell from 10 percent to 3 percent.?

And marijuana use was so politically toxic that when Bill Clinton ran for president in 1992, he said he "didn't inhale."?

Meds of a different sort?
Marijuana has been used as medicine since ancient times, as described in Chinese, Indian and Roman texts, but U.S. drug laws in the latter part of the 20th century made no room for it. In the 1970s, many states passed symbolic laws calling for studies of marijuana's efficacy as medicine, although virtually no studies ever took place because of the federal prohibition.?

Nevertheless, doctors noted its ability to ease nausea and stimulate appetites of cancer and AIDS patients. And in 1996, California became the first state to allow the medical use of marijuana. Since then, 17 other states and the District of Columbia have followed.?

In recent years, medical marijuana dispensaries ? readily identifiable by the green crosses on their storefronts ? have proliferated in many states, including Washington, Colorado and California. That's prompted a backlash from some who suggest they are fronts for illicit drug dealing and that most of the people they serve aren't really sick. The Justice Department has shut down some it deems the worst offenders.?

Legal weed at last
On Nov. 6, Washington and Colorado pleased aging hippies everywhere ? and shocked straights of all ages ? by voting to become the first states to legalize the fun use of marijuana. Voters handily approved measures to decriminalize the possession of up to an ounce by adults over 21. Colorado's measure also permits home-growing of up to six plants.?

Both states are working to set up a regulatory scheme with licensed growers, processors and retail stores. Eventually, activists say, grown-ups will be able to walk into a store, buy some marijuana, and walk out with ganja in hand ? but not before paying the taxman. The states expect to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for schools and other government functions.?

But it's not so simple. The regulatory schemes conflict with the federal government's longstanding pot prohibition, according to many legal scholars. The Justice Department could sue to block those schemes from taking effect ? but hasn't said whether it will do so.?

The bizarre journey of cannabis in America continues.?

University Uses Tesla Technology to Wirelessly Charge Electric Bus

Source: Activist Post

Utah State University presented a first-of-its-kind electric bus that is charged through wireless charging technology in a demonstration Nov. 15.

The Aggie Bus rolled onto the streets carrying passengers today; just 16 months after USU demonstrated the first high-power, high-efficiency wireless power transfer system capable of transferring enough energy to quickly charge an electric vehicle. In July 2011, the USU Research Foundation demonstrated 90 percent electrical transfer efficiency of five kilowatts over an air gap of 10 inches. The demonstration validated that electric vehicles can efficiently be charged with wireless technology.

USU's Wireless Power Transfer team, in cooperation with the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative's Advanced Transportation Institute at USU, has designed a more efficient way to meet the nation's transportation needs. By carefully applying a mix of modern advances in engineering and Nikola Tesla's principles of induction, USU engineer Hunter Wu and his team have solved one of today's vexing problems in WPT.

Their research has led to the development of a robust prototype, which has been fitted to the Aggie Bus. The prototype transfers power over an air gap where no physical contact is required. Wireless power transfer technology delivers a multitude of benefits to consumers that include greater reliability due to no moving parts or cords, added convenience through the elimination of plug-in charging, the assurance of safety by removing the risk of electrocution and aesthetically pleasing devices as a result of no visible wiring.

USU's Aggie Bus has achieved several significant milestones. It is the first bus developed and designed by a North American organization that is charged with wireless power transfer technology and is the world's first electric bus with WPT technology combining the three following performance metrics: A power level up to 25 kilowatts, greater than 90 percent efficiency from the power grid to the battery and a maximum misalignment of up to six inches.

"The unveiling of the Aggie Bus today is a historic achievement and a great leap forward in the science and engineering related to electric vehicles," said Robert T. Behunin, Ph.D., USU vice president of commercialization and regional development. "As a result of the work done by Utah State engineers, scientists and partners, EV owners and operators will now be able to simply drive over a pad in the ground to recharge their batteries, the benefits of which reach far beyond convenience."

WAVE Inc., a Utah State University spin-out company, worked in cooperation with the USTAR Advanced Transportation Institute to develop the Aggie Bus. WAVE tackles the problem of heavy and expensive electric vehicle batteries through wireless power that transfers electricity between vehicles and the roadway. The Aggie Bus represents a market-ready product that will be used to retire significant technical risk as WAVE moves onto full-scale projects next year.

WAVE, in partnership with the Utah Transit Authority, will launch its first commercial demonstration in mid-2013 on the University of Utah's campus. It will feature a 40-foot transit bus on a public transit route and an increase in wireless power transfer charging from 25 kilowatts to 50 kilowatts. The project has been funded by a $2.7 million TIGGER grant from the Federal Transit Administration and the University of Utah which purchased the bus. WAVE intends to deliver a commercially ready product that operates with the same reliability as current public transit bus options, including diesel and compressed natural gas buses.

How it works:

"Current battery limitations prevent an all-electric transit bus from operating all day from an overnight charge. WAVE solves that problem by charging the bus wirelessly during its daily operations when the bus stops to load and off-load passengers," said Wesley Smith, CEO of WAVE. "This technology makes electric buses competitive with their diesel hybrid and CNG counterparts."

Utah State University has refashioned the way in which it conducts its technology transfer operation. The office of Commercial Enterprises, a division of Commercialization and Regional Development, provides a one-stop-shop for industry partnership and intellectual property development. The Utah Science Technology and Research initiative is an innovative and far-reaching initiative of the Utah legislature to bolster Utah's high-tech economy by investing in university research programs and recruiting new, high caliber faculty. Utah State's wireless power transfer team is a significant part of USU's USTAR portfolio.

Submission Martial Art ? Recreation and Sports - adolph1's blog

Submission wrestling is really a general term used to explain a facet of fight sport and fighting techinques that focuses on ground fighting and clinch with the aim of making the opponent passout or submit. Submission wrestling is also known as submission grappling, submission fighting, sport grappling or combat wrestling in Japan.

Submission wrestling like a sport incorporates various styles and methods from traditional wrestling styles including Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Luta Livre Esportiva and Freestyle Wrestling.

Good Submission Wrestling

Submission wrestling has a long and rich history. The art of submission wrestling dates back to greater than 4000 years! This type of wrestling was common in ancient China, Greece, Rome and India. Paintings and sculptures that date back to a lot more than 2000 to 1085 BC portray wrestlers and combaters using this kind of wrestling in ancient Egypt.

It?s no surprise that grappling extends back way too long. Forever of time, man has been in conflict collectively because of the limited resources available. As fighting increased in different parts of the planet, individuals and societies started forming fighting and combat approaches for attack and martial arts.

As time progressed, wrestling became accepted as a sport helping the popularity of effective grappling techniques. In the late 1700s, the Greeks used rules of submission in combat sports that were much like those utilized in the Lancashire kind of wrestling which was common through the late eighteenth century.

Ground Positions in Grappling

Ground positions are essential as they squeeze opponent in a position which will make it simpler for a grappler to apply the submission maneuver.

You?ll find the different ground positions offered to a grappler who seeks to control a competitor. These positions include:

Side control: The opponent is pinned down in the side with the body. The grappler then applies her or his weight for the opponent?s chest, shoulders and hips.

Full mount: This location is mainly employed to use a choke hold or attack an opponent?s arms. The grappler sits on both sides of an opponent?s chest using his / her body weight to control the opponent?s chest muscles.

Back mount: The grappler uses her or his legs to hook the opponent?s thighs from other backs. The grappler also wraps their arms around the chest or neck in the opponent to regulate their chest.

Types of Submissions

Submission holds are classified into two broad categories: chokes and joint locks.

Chokes

Most of these submission attempt to restrict the opponent?s windpipe or their carotid artery causing them to distribute. Chokes which entail restriction with the wind pipe have become dangerous and many of them banned in combat sport.

Blood chokes but you are very common. These chokes cut blood circulation towards the brain creating the opponent to give out almost immediately. Such a submission is quite dangerous however and may simply be done under supervision coming from a trained specialist to prevent damage which may be caused by very long periods of unconsciousness.

Joint Locks

These submission holds involve isolating an opponent?s limb and forcing it to advance past its normal flexibility. These kind of submission techniques usually attempt to induce extreme pain for the opponent making him or her to tap out.

Joint locks can be very dangerous when utilized on the ankles, knees or perhaps the spine. Certain types of joint submission holds are banned in fight sport since they might cause serious trouble for a rival, ending her or his careers.

Common Varieties of Submission Holds In Fight Sport

The normal varieties of submission holds used in form of combat today apply joint locks, choke holds or a mix of the two. They include:

The Mandible Claw, LeBell Lock, The Anaconda Vice, The Walls of Jericho, Kimura, the ankle lock and also the Cripplers Crossface.

These holds are popularized by super stars like Chris Jericho, the late Chris Benoit, Brock Lesnar, Daniel Bryant, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle and CM Punk.

Most types of submissions used today are modifications of traditional grappling techniques. Submissions are very dangerous however and really should only be carried out by professionals because they can cause serious injury or perhaps death.

UFC welterweight Mike (Quick) Swick doubles as fighter-businessman

SEATTLE - Fighter, entrepreneur. Mike (Quick) Swick can wear his own signature shirt into the cage or design yours.

The UFC welterweight can also help you out with stickers, decals, banners and signs courtesy of his company Spartan Screen Printing in San Jose.

His day job came in handy when he was sidelined for 910 days due to a digestive disorder and knee reconstruction. After losing to Paulo Thiago at UFC 109 in February 2010, Swick did not fight until this past August.

Following that win over DaMarques Johnson, he returns to action Saturday against Matt (The Immortal) Brown on a televised card at the KeyArena.

Swick, 33, said while he had been smart with his fight winnings, "I never counted on a two-and-a-half-year rainy day.

"I invested all the money that I made, pretty much," said Swick. "I don't blow a lot. I invested in business. I have a business in San Jose and I did do that smartly so that it took care of me.

"But yeah, it's definitely not the same when you're not making fight purses. That's for sure."

Swick (15-4) made up for lost time in his comeback fight, when he collected a US$50,000 bonus for knockout of the night.

Swick's business also does custom-made fight shorts and he will be modelling his company's work on Saturday. Spartan Screen Printing does all the custom work for Swick's fellow fighters at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose.

The orders from the public can be challenging, Swick acknowledged.

"Pretty crazy stuff," he said, citing bachelor and bachelorette parties as examples.

His printing business came out of his Combat Live clothing line, which he started up so he could give gear to the U.S. military. He has done 15 military support tours, which have taken him to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Djibouti.

Those tours helped him fill his time away from the sport.

"It started with Combat Life and I wanted to print my own shirts ? obviously it would be better to print your own stuff than have I done," Swick said. "So I started small and it just grew. Now I have a big print shop."

His resume also includes owning a pressure washing company, selling cars, waiting tables, and time as a bouncer/bartender.

"I feel like next to fighting, I guess I'm an entrepreneur," he added. "I love business, I love trying to make business work and making the right decisions and building stuff."

Swick, along with former UFC fighter Roger Huerta, is also working on building a gym in Phuket, Thailand.

"That's my biggest dream," said Swick. "I've been working hard on that for the last couple of years and hopefully we'll get that going there pretty soon."

Swick, who has trained extensively in Thailand, says visits to the country "partially saved my life" during his layoff.

"To get away from everything and relax, it's a very peaceful place," he said. "It definitely helped me mentally."

It's not always been peaceful on his travels. Swick has drunk cobra blood, eaten insects, drained both his cauliflower ear and elbow, fired a machine gun in Cambodia, and been buried up to his neck on a Thailand beach ? all captured on video.

95% Argo

All Critics (241) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (230) | Rotten (11)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

The whole thing is paced like a whip, and the third act may literally be the most suspenseful piece of film I've ever seen - and yes, I have seen Rear Window. Recommended without any reservation for every and any cinemagoer.

A terrific supporting cast, especially the non A-list actors, make the dramatic license taken justified and redeem Affleck for miscasting himself in the hero's role.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

[A] gripping, beautifully performed and often very funny but dramatic thriller.

[Affleck] once again proves, as he did in The Town, that he's a pretty good actor but a great director.

getting-your-facts-right-on-the-four-fundamental-aspects-of-online ...

When most people start a new business, they often want to try out different forms of online marketing in order to ensure that they get as many customers as possible. This is one of the most effective means of marketing these days, especially given the fact that there are many people who are online at any one time. This means that if you can get the attention of even just a fraction of them, you can easily increase your sales significantly.

When you are thinking of investing in online marketing services, the tendency is to concentrate on some of the more complex issues surrounding this, since this is often seen as the most effective way of gaining more income. However, the fact of the matter is that in order to make online marketing work for you, you need to first sort out the fundamentals. These will then guide you on the best kind of marketing to use, and will therefore increase the chances of you making headway. If you are thinking of starting to do online marketing, some of the principles you need to live by include:

Most people think that since they run traditional brick and mortar stores, they do not need to use online marketing. However, this is a false premise. The fact of the matter is that all kinds of businesses can benefit from this kind of marketing. For instance, if you have a brick and mortar store, you can get online ads or simply do social media marketing in order to increase the awareness of your store. You should therefore not shun this method of marketing even if you run a simple brick and mortar store.

The goal of online marketing is to increase demand for your goods or services

There are many people who often lose touch of what they want when they start doing online marketing, and this often leads to other problems such as not getting the right results that they had expected. When you are thinking of starting to do online marketing, you need to keep in mind that the goal of doing so is to increase the demand for your goods or services, and hence drive up your sales. All the things you do should therefore be oriented towards this, otherwise you will simply be wasting your time and money. Keeping this fact in mind will also make it much easier for you to figure out what kinds of marketing opportunities are good enough for your use and which are not.

Effective online marketing is a dynamic process

Most people think that they need only pay for online marketing once, and then expect to increase the volume of their business for the rest of their lives. However, this is not always the case. Of course, there are times when you will pay for marketing in this manner and then find that it increases your sales transiently. If you need to keep your sales high, however, you will need to keep investing in the marketing.

For instance, if you are thinking of doing SEO on a site in order to increase traffic (and hence business) to it, you may need to keep spending a little money on the process in order to ensure that the measures instituted are current. The good thing is that most of the online marketing methods are usually not very expensive, so even the smallest of businesses can afford to maintain a particular online marketing campaign for a reasonable amount of time.

It is often much easier to work with online marketing professionals than on your own

Of course, you can try to find out more about how to do online marketing on your own, since there are many resources for this online. Though this may be a good way to save some money, it is not often a good ideal. The reason for this is that you will end up wasting a lot of time finding out the right kind of information you need to mount a proper campaign. When you ask professionals to do the work for you, you can tap into their experience to ensure that you come up with a high quality campaign in a short time, which means that it will benefit you much sooner than you had expected.

Clinton Biller is a Nashville internet marketing expert. His articles give insight to the various marketing fundamentals and help in understanding their process.

Feds: Texas businessman found with fake CIA credentials

By Scott Gordon, NBCDFW.com

The owner of a Texas dry cleaning business who was arrested in October had fraudulent CIA credentials, various weapons and camouflage items including raid gear, according to a federal search warrant obtained by NBCDFW.com.

Until his Oct. 2 arrest, Azeez Al-Ghaziani, 30, owned a dry cleaner in the city of Hurst.

Someone called Hurst police to report a damaged pickup parked behind his business.

When officers arrived, they saw what appeared to be fraudulent military identification cards inside the vehicle, police said at the time. They also found several guns and ammunition.

Police called in federal agents, and Al-Ghaziani's vehicle and business were searched later that day. He was arrested on a charge of tampering with a government document.

An agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service offered new details about the case in an application for a search warrant of Al-Ghaziani's computer, which is now in FBI custody.

The warrant was approved by a judge and executed last month.

According to the warrant, authorities found a number of suspicious items in Al-Ghaziani's pickup and business, including:

  • fraudulent CIA credentials;
  • Department of Defense military credentials;
  • assorted digital camouflage items;
  • body armor carrier;
  • raid jacket with duty belt;
  • and half-gram of white powder which tested positive for methamphetamine.

Al-Ghaziani's attorney, J. Warren St. John, declined to discuss why his client would have such things but did dispute the agent's information.

"The majority of the allegations aren't true," St. John said.

The NCIS agent noted in the court document that he is assigned to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, but there are no allegations Al-Ghaziani was involved in any terrorist plot.

Al-Ghaziani, a one-time soldier in the U.S. Army, is from Fort Worth, his attorney said.

Fatherhood workshop slated for Saturday - Marshall Democrat-News

After a successful first year of the fatherhood initiative, Powerhouse Community Development Corporation is beginning to develop the program even further.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, the organization will sponsor "Connecting with Your Kids," a Fathers Committed to Families workshop. According to organizers, this workshop will have several key topics, including participants identifying their fathering strengths and weaknesses, discovering how to connect with their kids and learning practical tips on how to be better dads.

"In that first year, we had about ... 45 or 46 participants," PCDC Director Charles Stephenson said of last year's 12-week program. "We've expanded it. Already, we've had ... 33 complete it so far" since July.

Additionally, nearly 150 fathers participated in the Dads Go to School program that took place this fall.

"We're now wanting to do more workshops ..." Stephenson said, adding these programs are open to the entire community.

Not only do organizers want to educate those looking to strengthen their fatherhood experience, they're hoping successful fathers will participate by becoming mentors for other men.

"Right now as we take them through the class ... 12 weeks is not enough to implement the transition," he said. "He's got questions at that point. We're hoping that as we're taking successful, loving, attentive, responsible fathers in the community ... that they will mentor some of the young men coming from probation and parole."

Some interested mentors have already begun planning group fatherhood excursions, such as fishing, playing baseball and other activities. Likewise, once-a-month father support meetings are being planned, and mentors will be able to communicate one-on-one at any time with those they're assisting. Mentors will go through a training program prior to being partnered with another father.

"Engage, educate, equip and empower. We want to do those four things," Stephenson said.

Saturday's workshop will include breakfast and lunch. Two guest speakers are also scheduled. One speaker is Jim Hargrave, a retired teacher who coached Marshall wrestling and football from 1965-1981, was named a Missouri Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach in 1988, and coached wrestling and football in Warrensburg from 1989-2006.

Another speaker will be Joe C. Meriweather, who played for the NBA for 10 seasons. Meriweather was a member of the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Jazz, New York Knicks and Kansas City Kings. He's now the CEO of 3C's Fatherhood Education Partnership, Inc.
